Hi guys just joined the forum yesterday although in the 3 years I've had my truck I've been here a lot looking for advice. I just had my trans done by Dipper and turned up my ppe from level 5 to 7 and am looking for some advice on what my egts/boost should be. Mods are in my sig..

I had the ppe boost valve installed and got around 26-27 psi on tune 5 (225). the truck makes good power and only smoked a little. egts stoped climbing just about 1400. I have it on level 7 now (300hp) and installed the kenney adjustable boost regulator set to about 30-32psi on spikes. the truck smoke a lot more. boost is only 27-28 psi till 4th gear then it spikes to 32 then holds 30. egts soar to 1600 and peg the guage early in 4th gear and never slowed down as they approached 1600. my rail pressure is holding steady at about 25k on my autometer gauge. I checked for boost leaks with a pressure/ smoke machine at my work and couldn't find any.

it makes me nervous to see the egt gauge pinned as this is my daily driver and I don't know how high they really are.
1. is this normal temps on this tune?
2. is my boost too high causing more heat then helping with air?
3. is lower boost till 4th gear normal on these trucks? i would think the fuel would still be there to drive the turbo to the set pressure.
4. would a turbo back exhaust make a large difference in egts?
5. Would efi tunes make the same power with lower egts? Or the heat comes with the power regardless

I want to do truck pulls this summer and take the truck down the 1/4 mile but wanted to have my egts under control first. I don't want a larger turbo at the time nor do I want meth injection. I see many people running this tuner on 9-10 and I have no idea how they keep there egts in check. that needle moves fast!! I emailed Dan at ppe but haven't heard back.

Ok I just thought ppe was supposed to be a good safe canned tuner so I thought it must be something setup wrong on my truck.

Do you think a new down pipe and 4 inch exhaust could make a large improvement? Just curious what people are seeing for a drop on similar setups.

I'm not against going efi live just wanted to see if I can get the temps lower with the ppe. Any ideas why I'm not getting the same boost in the lower gears as 4th? Maby if it was higher the temps wouldnt climb as fast.

Thanks for the replies

Sounds like your already at the airflow limits for the stock charger, especially depending on the elevation your located. Back in the day I varied mine from 20-32psi and EGT's/smoke did not change one bit with my 5000ft elevation. Intake and exhaust wont make a large change, more so minimal improvements. Maybe 100-200°F drop. Custom tuning at the same power level will probably net you the most drop but I can bet you'll still peg your EGT gauge. Short burst for drag racing/sled pulling will be completely harmless but if you still want to get the egt's down it's time to look at more airflow.:Charger::Charger:

PPE was always kind of smokey for me back when I ran it. Either live with it or move on to EFILive tuning from a reputable tuner.

I ran a level 6 PPE that somebody gave me to try back when I 1st got my BURB. HOLY HE!! the smoke, and EGT's would peg out nearly instantly at a stand still stomp on it. I only ran it for a few days as it was just WAY to smoky, and honestly not fun to drive. I looked at the tune, and the pulse width on level 6 was out of this world, but not much timing. Friggen thing was calling for a 3000+ PW with only 8-10 degrees of timing. My current tune is MUCH cleaner, and in all honesty, ALOT stronger. I would definately do an exhaust, but don't expect a big drop in EGT's. Custom tuning can make a HUGE difference in EGT's, and make the truck feel stronger by utilizing the fuel thats being given to it instead of blowing it out the tail pipe via black clouds of soot.

Big tune, stock charger/sticks = high EGTS no matter what you do...

Personally, I used to just not look at the pyro gauge. Haha, I would bury it on my LMM and it was a 2000 degree gauge. My lb7 with everything possibly done with a stock charger still in the valley will go to 1800 in the 1/4. Don't let it scare you just don't stay in it much past 100 mph, bad shit starts to happen...

It's funny when I was searching around for a tuner with low HP goals I just read how ppe was a good safe tuner. Prolly 10 year old posts Haha I never looked. Now that I have a built trans and my HP goals have change it sounds like I'm going to be ditching the ppe. Any recommendations of who's tunes I should go with?

Thebac... Do you remember what your egts were running that 511 HP with ppe? Just curious

Hnkstang, my comments weren't directed at you as much as at the responses of "buy a turbo" etc.
While air is ultimately what's needed with excessive egt's on proper tuning, proper tuning is what should be done first in your situation.

Its not that the ppe is a bad tuner. Its a canned tune that has to work for every truck and everyone that uses it. A custom tune would be better, but at 300 hp over stock your going to bury your egt gauge.

IMO get a new turbo if you want to stay at the power level your at, but want to lower egts. Weather it's with a modded stocker or whatever.

I run ATP'S tuning. I like it and I can always email/call if I have questions or tuning changes.

I ended up getting a new egt gauge that goes to 2000 with a peak and alarm function. And then ordered some tunes from atp. The ppe on lvl 7 doing 0-80 mph went to 1800. Got the tunes from atp installed today and my egts droppen to 1575 on the max effort ( was told slighy north of 500 hp) and 1400 on 450rwhp tune. Just wanted to share in case any one else was interested in what the difference would be on there trucks

I also order a downpipe and full 4 in exhaust while I was waiting on the tunes. I can't wait to get them on and see what difference they make
