Heads

I guess the biggest question would be why spend money for nothing if stock will get him were he wants to be? You guys are getting hung up on ported heads when they do very little for most people. K.I.S.S still works with a duramax.

Most places would do a three angle. There isn't a lot of valve seat area so going with five angles leaves a very tight contact area. High egts will then effect seat area more.

Hey Shane, how are your heads ? could you shine some light and lead the O.P. down the right path?

Thats why i wasnt going to mess with porting and polishing. I'm not building an all out drag truck, puller.. etc. But I also know that some flow can be picked up with a good valve job.... which needs to be done when its apart anyway.. its got 220k.

I have three trucks , One HP multi purpose with everything done and two daily driven stock with tuning. The one that I drive everyday has a three angle performance valve and stock springs. If you are only going to want a 700 HP truck do the performance valve job and a good set of springs. I run a dual spring setup. You will notice a peppier truck with just a good performance valve job with zero changes elsewhere. My truck with the ported heads runs more efficiently. The cost difference between the two different head combos is roughly two thousand dollars. I would not run a cup less head. I would run a screw in type cup. If you have had problems with lifting cups you most likely have a defective cup seat area and would need new castings or go with a screw in cup. At the very minimum do a good valve job and good springs. The performance job usually consist of a 45 seat, upper cut of 30 and lower cut of 70 degrees.

I'm not having any cup sealing issues. I was asking about valve work.

leave everything alone. get heavier springs and thats it. If 850hp is what you want save youself some money and dont worry about the heads. focus on putting together a solid bottom end.

cant do that... its got a broken crank. so its all apart. not just putting stock 220k heads back on a fresh bottom end. im spending the $$ on billet rods and main and head studs...etc. Im getting the heads done. Not messing with and Port and Polish work.... just a good performance valve job, good springs and push rods

Sounds like you already know what you want then.

Yea for the most part I do. I am just unfamiliar with the duramax. This is my first one. So thats why I was asking how many angle valve job to go with. Nothing more nothing less. I have had several built cummins and a mild built powerstroke. I work at Haisley Machine, a Cummins only shop. So this duramax stuff is a pretty big learning curve for me. I had this truck all of 3 weeks and the crank broke driving home from work.

It happens. I had one break just doing my normal old driving myself. Stock motor with mild tuning at the time.

But we dont work on anything other than cummins. We have people call all the time. We refer them to other shops. Cummins only.
