I just read those, 1 day would be hard to do, a weekend is more like it. And you would be retarded not to at least have a shop check the heads while they were off to make sure they are flat

My mechanic has done over 200 HG jobs and has only had 5 heads that had to be sent off. If they check out with a true straight edge they are fine, stop freaking people out, most Duramax heads are absolutely fine unless the truck was overheated...

OP, do it yourself, if the heads check out ok do not waste any money on having them machined...

Alright well I am researching on how to do this which doesn't mean I will but it helps to see many people are having the same issues and it makes me feel better lol. Tonight I am going to get myself a beater car just to run while I deal with this whole situation. The price I am going to save on fuel will probably make for the price I will loose over the ownership of the beater car and it beats renting a car. Buying the car from a friend who owns a dealership so I am getting auction pricing which helps since I hope to sell it back the same price I paid for it.

Support a vendor of this forum, check them out. They will have everything you will need, including head studs, unless you break something...

I have an ongoing battle with TDFdiesel and Durtothemax, if you feel they were trying to derail your thread please report them, their constant stalking is getting old and disruptive...

Your mechanic isn't much of a good one then. Every head that I have done has needed guides. Surface finish is premium to these heads sealing properly too. It takes a couple days to do a head job and book actually calls for 25 hrs. To the OP,Around here it cost in the neighborhood of 4100 bucks for a shop to do both heads. You can do it yourself using head studs with machining for about 1400 bucks if your have the patience to take your time and do it correctly.

Tell that to GM, he is the head tech of a LARGE dealership that specializes in commercial truck fleets. I bet you haven't even seen as many trucks as he has had apart. When you do it for a living day in and day out you get fast and learn shortcuts. I know he is ridiculously fast, but the quality of his work is unmatched....

Dealer mechanics fix only the task at hand. They do not remain any item. If it where to be a head that he felt needed work a new head would be ordered and used. Dealer mechanics are not the "experts". No I haven't done 200 heads yet either but there is a correct way to do something and only a idiot would overlook disassembling and verifying everything to be in good shape. That can't be done with a straight edge. Sorry for distracting if any to your thread but correct information is most useful to you obtaining the best results.

OP, get the heads checked. many small local shops do it, and can at least check them. there is no way I would pull a head and not check it, esp if it blew a HG on a stock tune. What is your zip code? I bet I can find a shop a short drive away that would check them for cheap. It cost very little for them to be checked. I think I paid 3-400 bucks to have mine shaved and a valve job. You can't check them yourself unless you have a straight edge that can measure a few thousands of an inch over the head.

It's a stock truck guys not a high HP reving monster. I'm out...

Good luck OP. if you listen to everyone on here you can't do it yourself, it takes a week and you have to spend a small fortune to have someone tell you your heads are fine...;)

People on here freak out about this job, it is just a head gasket job not brain surgery. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion...

You talk about all this stuff, yet you dont even work on your own truck....you've never even done head gaskets on a duramax. You just watch your expert mechanic do it once and then suddenly you're an expert. haha thats funny.

Wow... didn't know I was in an ongoing battle with you Shields, I appreciate you letting me know.

Stalking you because I'm a member on the SAME Duramax Forums you are? Hmm... Clearly I'm stalking you and not a member due to the subject matter of the forum.

I'm sure if you quit posting inaccurate and inconsistent information, everybody would stop posting on forums all together since our only reason for being on the forum is to stalk you. Wait... It looks like we were both here before you ever were. Ben was here for YEARS before both of us. Are you stalking me?

Just because you got banned on Duramax Forum doesn't mean you should litter your inconsistent inaccurate theories on every other forum.

You posted up inconsistent posts in the same thread and I just pointed them out, if you'd like me to stalk you I could probably make arrangements to do so.

Also.. Please tell me more about all these head gaskets your mechanic has done? If he's the one that has done the work, shouldn't he be the one posting on the forum instead of you or is he a figment of your imagination you use to prove your points?

Soooooo
getting back on track, OP if you need help there are a lot of people on here that can, just take your time and go slow, make sure you have some instructions, I did find a full GM tech manual online, I’ll go dig it up so you can get it and take a look at it. Post up your zip code and I’ll even look around and find what looks like a good shop to have them checked at. I would plan on a full weekend, or even 3-4 days if you are stuck outside doing it, I don't care what other people say that is my guess on the time it takes you having done it myself
And how about you guys go start a flame thread on the off topic section and stop clogging this guy’s thread up

You and your "mechanic" are idiots. I don't jump in and shit talk people but I worked in a machine shop while in college which is owned by a family friend. The ONLY time a head especially an aluminum head ISN'T pressure checked and resurfaced is if the customer didn't want it done or bought a new one due to it being bad.Your eye cannot see hairline cracks.Until you have diaged, torn down, and PROPERLY fixed an engine do not try and tell people how to fix one because you WATCHED it or somebody TOLD you.
