Kaitlin Brand became a YouTube sensation when she posted a video of herself, encouraging those with suicidal thoughts to seek help. In a recent interview, the Michigan teen opened up to The Insider about the day she found her mom's lifeless body after she committed suicide.

"When I found her I really didn't know what to do, because I really didn't believe it," said Kaitlin, whose mother hung herself in the woods by her home on October 5. "I felt like I was in a movie."

Kaitlin's YouTube video has touched many people's lives as it's made headlines and reached over 400,000 views -- just one of the reasons her friends call her "one of the strongest girls [they] know."

"If I could tell my mom one thing right now, it'd probably be that I love her and that I miss her," Kaitlin said. "This whole experience has made me realize that life is short and it's not worth it to fight with people because you never know when the last time you're going to see them is."

Men usually take their lives in a more violent way... be it hanging or a firearm. Women not so much.

Having 2 friends that took their own lives within 2 weeks of one another I wish they would have asked for help from me or anyone. I still see the one friends Dad in town with the bloody jacket he was wearing when he found his son still breathing. Shot himself with a 12 gauge in his front yard. Cut all the phone lines in the house and hid all the cell phones, said he was going out to feed the dogs.

Suicide isnt a "cowards way out" like some people think. People who commit suicide lack the mental tools to deal with their problems and become extremely depressed so they see suicide as the only route and often believe the world will be better without them. What most people dont understand is that depression is a diagnosnable disease resulting from chemical imbalances causing the brain to not function properly, its much more complicated than "im sad i think ill kill mysef"

not to mention the countless people that have suffered trauma and atrocities at the hands of others and cant cope with the constant reliving of it. Think of the trauma a kid that has been sexually abused must live with every day of their life, thru no fault of their own. Sometimes no amount of mental heath aid will help, much less make the pain and memory go away.

I hope that time, age and the general acquisition of wisdom helps you come to understand how ignorant that comment is before personal experience teaches it to you.

This is NOT a topic that lends itself to levity or sarcasm.

I agree 100%.

Stupid comments like that and the stigma attached to mental illness push people who seriously need help away from treatment.

I hope someday we as a society can learn to treat mental illness and it's victims with dignity and respect.

I'm really not sure it was meant in the way u guys are lookin at it. I agree it was wrong to say or worded wrong but I think he meant more of an easier way out. I understand fully what happens. Had a family member follow thru with it. No one had a clue what was even goin on, showed no symptoms or anything. Still confusing to me. But before I can agree with anyone, from my personal experience has led me to believe people who are dealing with this, it blindes there thoughts, they completely think for a quick fix and leads to this result. This is just my opinion and don't mean to disrespect anyone, but I also think its an easier way out. Still mad at myself for not seeing it, and mad at my uncle to.

I know im going to get flamed for this, if so, so be it. Dealt with quite a few suicides among my friends, family, and comunity. And what i have come to realize is this is the single most selfish act that a person can do. If you are unable to ask someone for help, then you dont belong here. What about all of us you leave behind? What about how we are going to feel? Think about those closest to you who will spend the rest of their lives wondering if they are a bad person for not noticing something was wrong. Those who think only of themselves and not the scar they are going to leave on those who care most about them...that kind of selfishness doesnt belong in this world. The damage done by their single action is far worse than the pain or embarasment caused by asking for help.

Strongly agree

Personal experience taught me at 15 years old. Most are just looking for a way to stop the mental pain. Anyone who has suffered from depression knows it is worse than physical pain. I myself have never suffered from depression but I hope I never do.

In some cases there is NO TIME to try and help a person that acts so selfishly. I had a very close friend commit suicide becuase of a bad relationship that ended suddenly. He took his life the night the break-up happened, and to this day I think he made the wrong decision!

I did not think this would have been a controversial topic.

The reason I posted this was less about mother that committed suicide but more about how her daughter is dealing with it. I don't know about any of you but I know I would not be able to make the video she made only a weeks after finding her mother.

She says she is not strong but to me that is what strong is. Someone able to push through the pain and see that maybe she can help others before it is to late.

I have known 3 people in my life that have committed suicide none of them showed signs of anything wrong. To this day I still wish I could have been there to help them if only they let me know they needed help.

suicide is for cowards

Maybe in some cases, not in others. My stepbrother hanged himself 35yrs ago, he was manic depressive. His father had been manic depressive and had long before committed suicide in a car wreck. Over the years a few guys I'd known since highschool committed suicide as adults....they had terminal cancer. So a flat statement like that is wrong.
