Jason this is why I love porting and I know it's expensive and not for everyone and I'm not saying you have to take it to the max either.I had my heads ported because of that and then my manifolds were to small and I had to send them out and have them opened up to meet my heads. When flowed they picked up 30 cfm intake and 60 cfm exhaust so now I'm flowing very well now.I just need to get the taller ped on that Russell ported for me and I should be all set after some new piping from WCF.

Thanks for the compliments guys:hug:

Looks good, glad I have an LB7 with less shit in that engine bay!!!:D

Garrett turbo up pipe ports are better than IHI's but still benefit from a clean up.

That right up pipe looks way off. I've never come across one that bad. I would first look at the up pipe to see if there's something wrong. Were this stock up pipes or PPE?

The exhaust manifolds can be cleaned up to but if you look at your heads(if they're stock) they should be the same size as the exhaust manifolds but different than the manifold gaskets. This is how they are on stock exhaust manifolds. I would still gasket match everything you can, that's what I do :D.

Thanks! The LBZ does have allot of accessory crap, but I'll gladly trade the rats nest of wires for injectors that can swap out in a few hours:D

The PPE mani's are port/gasket matched at the top and bottom of each port, they are dead on too, I didn't/couldn't take any material from the top or bottom of all 8 runners, the sides were less than great though...
The manifold gasket has a much larger footprint than either the ports in the head or the manifold

Did the up pipe gasket get put on backwards on the right side maybe?

Well, it only "really" fits one way, I didn't install that gasket, however I remember it not matching up all that well (From feel) when I installed it the time before, but that's a good question, cuz after further inspection, the gasket that came off that side was bent on the corner, I don't think that happens when it's on right....I didn't think to slap a gasket up to the pedestal to check it out before I sent it off to Danville...oops

Question for the forum:
I have a question about porting the head, in my circumstance the heads are still on the engine in the engine bay, so I'm wondering...
1) what would be the best way to seal off the valves from the area I'm going to be sanding
2) how deep into the runner should I go? It seems like there's plenty of material so I'm not too concerned about taking too much out, but how far into the runner should I take it, an inch? I could take it back almost all the way to the valve but I don't want to get any grit back in there...

Your thoughts please...

Hey Scott-
So you had your heads off, sent them out and had them hand ported, or CNC'd?
Then, after the work was done you picked up a notable gain, fer sure, but do you think the exhaust flow was increased as a direct result of intake flow increase, yeah?

I wouldn't mess it on the truck. Asking for trouble IMO. Probably not worth the tiny gain either

This is what I'm thinking...
I am all for porting, but not under these circumstances, as bad as I'd like to do it, I think I'm gonna puss out on this one...

I can't have a set swap out in 3 hours but I can do it pretty fast :D.

Don't mess with those heads on your engine, you're asking for trouble.

Porting/polishing does help but from talking to people much smarter than me it sounds like your big gains come from installing larger valves to let more air in. Porting/polishing is still good and I feel it's something that should be done, this is just my opinion.

If they had to come off I'd be for it.I hate to throw away a perfectly good set of head gaskets. And no as there was a gain on the intake of only 30 but the exhaust side gained 60 cfm so it just shows the head either made 8th most gain in the reworked bowl area or the exhaust exit.

I wouldn't even touch em. Honda has stock heads and is doin just fine.

Same guy that did my heads has been doing Honda heads and they are making very large improvements with porting.
