Yep just bought an 83 mustang GT with a 4 speed floor banger....

Not sure what I'm getting into here.....but I'm gonna make it a dad/daughter rebuild in a few years.

I'm going to start with cosmetic stuff and just get it running right a bit over the next few years.

I really want the lil one to be involved in something big, but not gonna force her obviously.

But something for her to call her her own when she gets old enough to drive.

Am I wrong in my thinking?

Dad and I restored my 72 Chevy together. I was drivin it around town when I was 15. I still have it and wouldn't sell it for any amount of money. His love for vehicles obviously passed on to me because I always have a project or two. He's the first person I send pics of all my mods to. My plan is to do another restore with my kid one day. I think it's a great idea.

My oldest is 19 months and my other is 1 month. Hope to do something like this with them. And like you said then they can drive it and have a respect for what it takes to keep up on a car.

I wouldn't let her have it as her first car...but sounds like a great project. Maybe 10 years from now you will have your truck running and can start the next project....

My son is one month old and I want to get him a fox body mustang for when he turns 16 it will be LS powered though :roflmao:

On the other hand if he is like his dad he should probably start out with something slow :spit:

What ever we decide I look forward to fixing up something together for when he is old enough to drive

It will be something she will remember for the rest of her life. Back in 93 me and my dad bought a 81 Malibu, worked on it for a year & a half. A lot of headaches along the way but great times. Still have that car and think about those days whenever I see it.
BTW, great project car. Good luck with it.

I got the first Mustang GT in Ca in '82. It had 185 hp 2 bll carburated 302 engine. It was a dud.

Oh cmon....dont listen to these guys....post some pics. I have very fond memories of my 83 GT. I think I still have parts from that car up in the garage attic.

I went from OEM 302 to a set of truck heads (1.90/1.54) to building a Boss 302 to swapping in an Olds 455 (its what I had available). I scared my Dad on a test drive once.

Id find an 8.8 rear from an 86-90. The 7.5 wont take much more than stock power (all of 195hp).
Also, since tires for the old metric wheels are mucho-dollar (at the time, only Michelin had tires for them), Id find the old 10-hole GT wheels from the 85-86 cars.
Buy a good short-throw shifter if its a manual.

Better heads are an absolute must. ANYTHING is better than the OEMs that year. The ports are so small it'll make you laugh.
Porting the exhaust and a pair of shorty headers will help immensely.
A Holley 600 on stock fuel is better than OEM, or a 750 with a decent cam and intake will really wake the engine up.
Rod bolts and balance the crank.
I was never a fan of Ford small blocks, but technology nowadays helps a lot to get more power out of them.

If my younger brother woke up one of these days with a hair up his ass and said he wanted to start some project to restore and repower something... I'd be happier than a tornado in a trailer park.

Here the specifics of it.

it has a 302 v8 edelbrock carb and breather, chrome valve covers mild cam accel coil etc... i put a new water pump on it and bought the correct aluminum p/s bracket on in place of angle iron the previous owner made when the ac pump was deleted. it has a serpentine belt system and a 4 speed manual transmission. it also has 4 wheel disc brakes but not sure if back has been hooked up. has new gas shocks and nice black cloth interior. it also has 17 x 8 Saleen Wheels on the front and 17x9 on rear with nice 275 40 17 zr rated tires. the front tires were 245 45 17 but are no longer on the wheels. wheels are in fair shape clear coat is peeling along with paint on car..

So I'll need a new battery and 2 front tires. And knowing the guy who owns it right now, I'll have my hands full fixing all the stuff he "fixed".
