I've went to two job fairs so far this fall. No one's hiring engineers for a while. Get told check the website, no on site interviews. Used to have a job lined up at Cat but that bubble burst. I'll probably give up on looking for a job and start my own business next spring when I graduate.

I'm a civil engineer working with landfills - from design to permitting to gas system design, operation and maintenance to whatever. I thought it was a recession proof field to be in but the waste intake has slowed down about 10-30%. So our construction season was the worst anyone at our firm could remember and the firm has been around for a few decades. Next year is scheduled to be stupid busy though since very little was built this year. So we laid folks off only to have to hire back some more in a couple of months.

I whine about my job a good bit to the wife but in actuality, I'm really blessed. Decent pay, good benefits, they pay all retirement so I don't have to contribute anything to it, and the people are awesome.

JOB = Journey Of the Broke IMHO.

Having a job is good, owning a business or business's and choosing your path in life is the best.

I have been self employed since 1992, I worked briefly for a large company for 8 years and while the job was OK the loss of freedom sucked big time.

I like everyone else am slower that I used to be, partly because of the economy, partly because of the increased competition in what I do in both of my business's, but in the end I'll survive POS OBAMMY and the next three years.

Good Luck to everyone, self reliance will get you thru this, not Uncle Obammy and the Democraps.

;)

Why do people get so imature when they start talking political? You made a nice intelligent post about owning your own company, then you ruined it with the last sentence, when it wasnt even the topic. Everyone has there own opinion no matter what it may be, and last time i checked i learned in elementary school to respect others opinions. No matter who the president is, crying about the economy/government and name calling helps absolutely nothing, and makes you look elementary.:thumb:

I won't go through this thread as it will only depress me more, but I've been out of work for a month, and it's very stressful. Things have came up in the last month I didn't account for that ate away at the little money I had put back.
I've been traveling with my job since 2001 and it's sad. On top of that, unemployment says I owe them $1500, and I have a child support case for $135 a week, AND not only myself but 2 young ens and a wifey to support.
Times are rough and honestly I only see it getting even worse. Hopefully I'm wrong.
What pisses me off the most, is these guys that just got hired on with an infamous local company that everyone wants to work for, yet we can't get on, and the new hires never show up for work, or their the wrong color/ethnicity.
Throw in the mix illegal immigration, welfare, this health reform crap. What the hell is our country headed to??
It's frightening to say the least I believe.

I took a test today, we have to pass this test with a score of 9 in order to apply at certain companies. I passed with a 20 of a possible 21, and sad thing is I probably won't get the job because I'm white................yea I said it because I'm WHITE. Even with a "decent" paying job here at home, I'll be taking a 66% paycut.

Now I know everyone is having a hard time finding work, but it pisses me off that these ****ing lazy bums and illegals are having it better than me.....
It's only a matter of time people, only a matter of time before SHTF and there a major uprising/rioting/total collapse of the economy and the America we used to know.
Only a matter of time, mark my words.

I got laid off seven months ago, I've been scratching by. It's a little easier since i'm single. I'm fortunate to live on a farm so i can still have a little income.

I have plenty of free time now so I go to all of the diesel events i can. I've pretty much broke even on that. It's been kinda fun.

What is such a joke is I have applied for jobs I'm so over qualified for its not even funny and didn't even get a phone call. I have 1 that sound promising but its about 2 months out before I'll even get the second interview. I'm damn lucky my wife makes enough to cover a good bit of our bills, or I'd be working 3 jobs paying minimum wage. This sound like EFing pity party and that irritates me even more.

I didn't know you voted for Obama, but it's clear as day you did by your dislike of my opinion of "your" President.

If you want the honest truth, Democrats don't respect other people's opinions, at least the Liberals don't.

Sorry I didn't meet your expectations in my post, maybe that's why your a Democrat and I'm not, I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK.

Have a nice day.

I'll go back to the second grade and ask Miss Crabtree to teach me some respect, OK

Family owned business, MRI. We have been around since the late 40s. My dad has run the company for the past 20yrs, he says "I have never seen it this slow" We have over 50 machinist, performing cnc operator tasks. It is really depressing, we have some of the most talented machinist in the country and they are running production parts. We are blessed to have Air Products keeping us busy, they are floating us along right now. Making payments on machines that aren't making you money or even working for that matter sucks. So far nobody has been let go, and that is a number 1 concern for now. We love our crew and will do everything possible to keep them with us. God has blessed our family in many ways. Without him we are nothing.

God can see us through this! I pray for the USA.
