Was in a similar spot. Lost my job and spent a year and a half sending out an average of 3 applications/resumes a day.

Finally got something that is about half of my previous income.

Stick with it!

Hey Mike,

My whole career has been in the architectural and structural engineering/technology field ... I'm retired now (circa 2003) primarily because I saw what was coming down the track. Sold my practice and spent the next 3 to 4 years prepping and getting our cabin in the woods set up. Fortunately for me, my DW has a great job in the medical field.

Over the course of the past 25 years I've lived a 'feast or famine' lifestyle in my line of work. It's tough to count on anything long-term. Fortunately, I think your 'environmental' background is your ace-in-the-hole. I'd be looking at some opportunities in the energy industry. As an example, the guy I just purchased my truck topper from works for two weeks in northern Alaska, then spends two weeks at home here in northern Idaho. Not the best situation for a family guy, but he makes good money doing environmental over-sight work, yet still gets some quality time with his wife and kids.

Also - and this is huge - check out the Hanford Nuclear site in southern Washington. Last I heard, they still have years of clean-up work ahead and lots of opportunity. That's why the tri-cities area hasn't really felt the effects of this recession/depression.

Keep the faith and look outside of LV ... in the meantime realize that most jobs lost in this country AREN'T COMING BACK!

Just my 2 cents ... good luck!

exactly what does "environmental design" entail? I work for an Environmental/Civil engr. firm in KY as a CE designing/working with landfills. Our firm also does water line design, sewer line design, water & waste water treatment plant design and air quality engr.

Is this the type of stuff you could do? We've gone through layoffs last year but business is picking up (we didn't have a single landfill expansion last year, but they're making up for it this year! I'll be a busy guy this summer taking the place of TWO inspectors. yippy!) again so maybe something local to you is as well? Isn't Waste Management big time out on the west coast? Try hopping on their site and seeing if/what they have available if you haven't already???

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I know how you feel. Living in a college town sucks and there arent any jobs that pay worth a crap. I have had more than a dozen interviews and still cant get a job. They know that some kid that gets bills paid by mom and dad will do the same work for a whole lot less money.

Not a bad idea to leave my college education off my resume when applying to certain places.

I'm just about ready to quit grad school and move somewhere else.

Like said above, try the government jobs. I work for the Navy up here in Washington. I'm the guy who cuts the boats up and ships the reactors out to Hanford in Richland. We have 50+ boats waiting to get cut up and the reactors have to get shipped out west. I know I will have work until those boats are gone and there are more sitting all over the country at other shipyards just waiting the same fate. I know I have a long term career and it's not slowing down anytime soon. There is going to be a HUGE project starting in a fe years and the Navy is hiring a TON of people at the yard I work to get it done. They are hiring now in preperation for that job and other future jobs. It's a great time to get in and the money ain't that bad either. They are always looking for people with college. You will have relocate but it looks like your options are getting thin.

You might want to try Hoover Dam. I'm sure they have some federal job openings. I thought about getting out of the crappy weather up here and moving there. Just another option for you.

Here's a link for the Navy web site to get started. Check out the job openings and fill out a resume. You never know what will happen and i'd look at job fairs going on. I got hired on the spot. If not it's always good to talk to people face to face and get your name in their brains.

You might get a certificate error, just click "continue to site". It's safe, it's just guberment ran

You might have to take the /index.asp off for it to work. GOOD LUCK

Mike I am in the same boat, I came back from Iraq almost 6 months ago now, I had my surgeries and I have seriously looked for work everysingle day I'm not as well schooled as you but in the welding auto tech departments I am very knowledgeable, hell I'm certified for any and all position welding in 3 different welding process's and I still get no calls back.

I don't get it man, I am finally gonna break down and look into unemployment now, as my money from overseas was not intended to cover me whille I sit on my ass and do nothing... I wish you the best of luck man

Any power plants in Kansas?? In Southern Indiana along the Ohio river, the power plants hire up all the welders they can get. Just have to pass some tests for their pipe welding processes.

Damn that sucks! The auto industry sucks too and thats why i got out in Aug. Applied at other shops when things got slow at the GM dealer and was basically told that techs that usually go for well over $20 an hour were being hired at $15ish since the market was flooded by techs with the closing of so many shops. The Infinity dealer i interviewed at wouldn't even make an offer because they said it would be so much under what I was making it would be useless too even throw it out there. They said they had former techs begging for wash bay jobs. I work in a materials laboratory and am liking it. I actually worked here for a bit a while back when i got fed up with the dealership one time before.

Sorry to hear Mike, its tough a lot of places , up here is actually doing OK but my wife did get her hours cut at work , and myself and her have taken pay cuts in the last year , along with my second job which is 60% under the normal pace , that's the main reason i started my own thing is to take up the slack never really planned on making my hobby A "job" .

I would make good and sure they are being fair Mike and not Discriminating , legally they are required to give you a fair chance , but we both know that doesn't always happen :( .

Best of luck Mike

Local Dodge dealer is hiring like crazy for sales and auto techs, 13.50 an hour for techs, and the dude was trying to sell me on a sales job promiseing 100K plus a year. Negative I have no issue selling what I beleive in, GM is all I beleive in. So I'd make a shitty sales men.

Customer: " So tell me about the new Cummins 6.7"

Me: " Well Comapred to the Duramax trucks sold just down the road they suck I can draw you a map to the chevy dealer"!!
