The problem with buying a rebuilt-from-salvage vehicle is that there are so many hack body shops out there these days that will piece one together with half-ass body work and questionable parts/skill to make it look decent enough that the average person doesn't even realize how bad it is. If I knew who did the rebuild and trusted their work, I wouldn't have a problem buying a salvage title vehicle.
That very thing bit a good friend of mine in the ass recently with a newer Chrysler 300. He's not "car literate" , and bought the thing without even asking me to look at it. He brought it over and Roni and I were like, "Damn, you got ripped off".

I rebuilt the Regal mechanically and trust it 100%.

I have seen pics of this truck from it's auction, so I know what needed to be repaired. Just got to go look at it.

Far as I know there remains only 2 major salvage auctions where most mangled things land. IAA or Copart. Both have full inventory online 24x7.

Many moons ago, I was buying cars out of IAA in Newark NJ, and then driving them back to Ohio the following weekend. All the cars people in NYC donated for a tax write off, ended up at that salvage auction. All clean title, and most drove away. But ya had to be quick and get there before the forklift guys set them outside the gate Those guys typically did more damage moving the cars around, than any of them had when arrived there...

Nate, is that twisted wreck what you started with? If so, that is amazing work!

Driver's airbags activated, so Ill check for any codes for the sensors/module. Double check all the suspension/front end parts installed correctly, same with all front plastics around the wheel wells and bumper/grille.
Im bringing the wife along, and she has an incredible eye for detail on vehicles, so she'll see anything I dont.

You'll want to replace the SRS module. Then see what codes you get for crash sensors. You might be able to get codes for sensors with the activated SRS but I wouldn't rely solely on that. But you probably already know that

Yeah, had to deal with the SRS module code on the Regal. There are no CEL or airbag lights active on the dash. so they may have reprogrammed the modules.

I just found a Canyon CC/SB Duramax on FB w/90,000 miles local. Sent that guy a message, too. Same basic option packages, too.

Take a close look at the frame in that area too. If they sprayed with a bunch of under coating it could be a red flag. You cant tell if was repaired correctly or not when they try and cover it up with under coating. Also when bolt holes have to get hogged out for it to get an alignment obviously something is wrong.

I would pull the plastics and look under the carpet too. Make sure the floor is not wadded up underneath.

Yep that is what we started with. Basically only things that stayed original were the drive train, wiring and interior.

Went and looked at the truck. They did a nice job repairing the suspension/mechanicals. Bodywork/paint not done especially well, though. Beautiful truck, but passing on it. On to the next one.....

All of you are talking about buying salvaged or rebuilding trucks and stuff. I want to give thanks to Jason for giving me information and what to look for. I bought a used 2012 VW Jetta wagon TDI. It had two owners counting the guy I bought it from. He has his own VW repair shop and has replaced the HP(CP4) pump, in tank pump, fuel rail, injectors, serviced the trans and replaced the timing belt. The car rides nice, handles nice and has a lot of room for my work tools in the back. Going to leave it stock for now except tint the windows.
Got for $5500.

The reason I bought it was I was putting a lot of miles on the 24. I'll be driving this little wagon a lot and sometimes over 100 miles a day. Looking forward to the good mileage and not putting it on the truck.
The wagon only has 180,000 miles too.

Kept looking, found this one:

Been talking to the private seller. Turns out this truck may have been a GM test mule/preproduction truck for the 2.8 Duramax, and the RPO codes back that premise. I find that interesting.

Never heard of one of those making out in the wild. I would assume it would have everything maintenance and repair wise done to it while in GMs hands. Even if put through a tough life it would be cared for. No telling how the subsequent owners cared for it
