Is this a bad turbo?

Im doing fuel line work on my lly and decided to pull my turbo and inspect some things. First i noticed there's a little play in the compressor wheel. Not a whole lot as it doesn't bind and spins freely. But i noticed theres oil seepage in between the the two housings. Also in the turbine housing i can see oil. What does this tell me? Ive been wanting to upgrade turbo anyhow. This unit has 230k miles on it . Thanks!

This one came out of a stock 88,000 mile LMM motor with a broken crank, the shaft play is minimal, thrust/in and out is none and the PCV was intact. Took a few months for the boot at the turbo/hotpipe to clear up on my truck after I redid the PCV. Not sure how the compressor wheel leading edges were rounded off, maybe the owner ran without an air filter...

Shaft Play sounds normal. Oil on the compressor side is normal if the crankcase vent has not been relocated, but if you are getting visible oil on the ex. side ur seal is bad, could be from Heat soak after a hot shut down, from dirty oil, bad bearing, or just a freak incident, normally the turbo is still good at this point if the engine is well maintained and not abused. I def wouldn't install it again without getting it rebuilt.

Ok thanks guys! Yea no oil on compressor side just inside the exhaust side. And oil on the outside in between the two housings. Looks like i have a good excuse to put a 68mm stg2r in haha im gonna push it out and let it sit till i get the money gathered up. I dont know how you all afford this stuff lol any tips on having this thing sit outside all winter here in ohio? Batteries, tires? Maybe a cover? I dont want the batteries to go bad or flat spots in the tires.

The oil on the exhaust side is from a piston seal that is starting to go out. You don't have much so it's not too bad.

I'd at a minimum rebuild the turbo or upgrade being you're in there.

Haha, I like VGT's for their quick spooling characteristics running larger comp wheels. But don't like them for their high drive pressure and can sometime have high EGT's.

It all comes down to preference really though.

I prefer Non VGT cz of better EGT Control and easier on ur headgaskets lol. With good tuning, a 366SXE will spool awfully close to a stock VGT. However then u loose ur ExBrake:rofl: Like you said...its pretty much preference and what u want out of ur turbo.

Agreed. But if you drive smart by either down shifting or give yourself enough braking distance you'll be find either way.
I've never had or towed with a VGT and I've been fine. That's not to say I wouldn't like the turbo brake but you work with what you've got!! Haha

I'd rather have twins!!!

[/QUOTE]Yessir LOL an S475/96 over the stock VGT makes a towing MONSTER!!! That's what I recommend to costumers that want to make 600+ but still hook to a 30' gooseneck a lot. Really good EGT control, great spool up, u take a lot of strain off ur Vanes and u can retain ur ex brake lol.

Just dropp in a 4094 VVT and be done with it. They make enough power on stock fuel to blow up the stock bottom end so why go any bigger untill your ready to buid it. They are easy to tune and drop in, plus they sound great.

Well i was tossed up between a 3794 stage 2 and the DP Billet 68mm Stg2R. What turbo do you guys think is better for my application? Ill most likely stay stock fueling for a while but eventually some injectors. Im thinking the 68stg2r???

Stage 2r was designed to help with the lmm coding issuse, not really needed in your truck. Im sure it would spool faster though so it maybe worth the extra money.

I'd do a 3794 over a 4094 every day. 3794s are sweet little turbos. Either box stock or one from danville.

What about Mark's BMW GT3794VA? Maybe a little more bang for the buck? Looks like its supposed to spool better than and have the high end of the 4094. I don't have any experience with these aftermarket VGTs. So far I've always gone to Non VGT, but it does sound like there is some good ones out thr! Maybe I'm a little behind the times!
