I agree with that last line. IMO it is due to the heat induced expansion and velocity increase that happen in the compressor. The best no-fan, WOT efficiencies I am seeing (steady state) are around 60-65% with stock plumbing, that is at 70 mph. Also found that the best think I could do for the CAC, was fix everything else that is making it more difficult to perform its job. Namely lower the temp of the charge hitting it. That also slows air flow speed as well. A lower temp charge, is slower.

This data also supports the concept of pre-turbo water injection. That will slow charge velocity also, much like larger CAC tubes do.

With the stocker, I have found ambient airflow is insufficient, for the charge mass throughput that needs cooling. That is why I searched for sources of excess heat, then eliminating it. Resistance prior to the compressor was where I found most of the improvement potential. Like having a free super double duty CAC. The turbo spins slower also.

All in all, a new CAC is a lot of money for very little performance return. IMO

What intercooler?:D

I'm seeing considerable gains in flow by getting rid of it. The real danger in doing this, is the filter for busted turbo parts will be gone. Other than that, I can't see how a heat soaked intercooler could have any positive effect on performance. The air does not have time to dispensate much (if any) heat under boost. The air is moving so fast at this point.

Once the "air radiator" (intercooler) gets hot what is it really doing?

Guy's that tow heavy may see some benefits from having one.

I think you could just spray a little water during boost situations and get the same cooling effect without the restriction. The stock intercooler weighs about 30 lbs also (for you drag racers).

Just my uneducated opinion.

Do yall think a standard 220 psi water/meth pump with lines plumed preturbo will atomize the water enough to not cause turbo erosion at the wheel?

I have thought about getting a second snow kit and plumbing it into the intake tube- pre-turbo but I am worried about the water no being atomized enough? Just a thought.

i woudl be more worried about the r/a of the turbo becoming un-balanced more so than any errosion....

you are talking about somehting that is spinning 50,000+rpm

BTW yes it will errode the compressor wheel period! the question is how much:cool:

Nothing really fast with a turbo or supercharger runs an intercooler.

If you've got the power to push the air in, it's temp is not as important as you would think.

I catch alot of "heat" for this theory, but all my math says that at full tilt, the air is moving too fast for today's crop of intercoolers to be effective.

I've finally got some equipmentr to experiment with, I just need time. With out an intercooler my egt's sore.

Hello KB:
Not to take anything away from the present topic, but I gather from your one posting that it sounded like you found positive road results from the modifing of the turbo intake tube?? Would that be correct?
Still waiting to try mine out, but this crazy 1 1/2 feet of snow that we're getting right now has put that on hold.
So it also looks like increasing the CAC tubes will help for a person towing a 5th wheel?
Thanks to everyone for their input so far.

this is very interesting. A pulling friend of mine has the ppe intercooler going now. We'll see what comes of it. Pretty sure there is a substantial loss in boost as a result of the stocker. Hope to verify/confirm that this weekend. :D

Well, I can only speak from experience.

I put a prototype Action Radiators CAC in my truck. My boost measured at the crossover was approx 2 pounds higher. EGT did drop about 35 degrees, but added boost would have done that by itself, correct??

I found no real difference in power, on or off the dyno. Also nothing in economy. Nothing concrete in the OH department yet either.:(

All this was with a stock turbo and mild tunes though. I expect the gains would be higher as boost and tuning increased.

The smaller the water droplets the better off you will be, so you should run small nozzles and you may have to run more of them to get enough water. JMO

I'm not showing any decrease in IAT's or EGT's as a result of the modded turbo inlet......:)

I'm showing anywhere from 1 - 3 psi difference in boost from pre and post intercooler boost gauges......:)

IAT is a function of air sourcing, fan ops, etc.

Pre-turbo EGT (WOT) should be reduced some Larry, assuming you are observing an increase in MAF. Not sure what mouthpiece you are referring to. The wide open one that i just sold made a clear difference. It won't make any difference to part throttle EGT.

If you put a temp probe on the compressor discharge, that is where the most observation of change should be from eliminating inlet restriction.

But this sure is going sideways fast.
