Hmmm...I wonder if you have a simple corroded connector. The top back of the instrument cluster is where the connector is. Removing the cluster is dirt-simple. Remove the connector and reconnect it and see if that helps.

There is also a voltage regulator on the circuit board that can go open or go for a:poop: it is a 0.75 part.

Where on the cluster and can you buy just the part. Mine is doing the same thing. Only now I noticed the glow plug light doesn't come on when you first turn the key (no codes), but the gages come on.

The cluster is not shot the internal voltage regulator has gone open it is under 2 dollars to replace.Or you have some cold solder joints on the circuit board.

There are 2 regulators on that circuit board one controls the sift selector display.
you have to test them as the numbers/values are proprietary/meaningless and wont cross reference to a standard replacement regulator.

Thanks for the info and pics Canadian Cowboy!

That looks like the exact area I have to hit mine to get it to "wake up".

Where do I get said regulators? Also my shift indicator hasn't worked in two years, so it sounds like both regulators are shot.

Are the regulators easy to replace (do they plug in)? I do residential electric...vehicles are a new thing.

They are soldered on the circuit board, that circuit board is very delicate and easily can be ruined most semiconductors on the board are SMT (surface mount technology)
very small you need test equipment to check the board properly.
Unless a person has electronics experience I would leave it somebody that has the knowledge and equipment.

reviving this thread, any of you who had this experience, did you ever notice your cluster going through its initiation cycle at random times when the engine was not running and the key was off/removed? IE: you're sitting in the driveway talking to a friend with the thing off, and the gauges swing to zero an do their little buzzing thing like when you first start the truck...but nothing is on and the engine is not running...

I heard my cluster going into that mode (grinding/churning noise) without the key on or in the ignition. When I heard it I was just getting into the truck and I did not witness the needles pulling down to zero on the gauges.

Ok, just making sure im not loosing my mind. :roflmao:

On a side note...my cluster just reported the best mileage ive ever gotten...says i drove 110xxx miles on my last tank. And in only 10 days too! 5000 MPG seems pretty good! I gotta get this thing replaced...

Yes, barring an anomaly (getting a used cluster with the exact same mileage and hours) any used cluster or new cluster is going to have to be set to your truck.

I would assume a half-hour charge to set the mileage.

Just FYI, the cluster has to be programmed from a cluster place before the dealer can reprogram the miles. If you just remove the cluster from one truck and put it in another one the dealer cannot reprogram miles.
