I'm not sure if this is the right place but it seems to be the most relevant...
I don't have my Duramax yet but I'm buying a new one once I return to the states. I'm just doing my research before I get there...
I've heard of someone dropping porcelain injectors in thier F-350. It got them an extra 6mpg's. The guy runs 38's and gets about 25mpg's. And that's without a programer. Has anyone else heard of this?

You would be better off with custom tuneing.
Was the 6mpg clame proven by the trucks computer or done on paper.if it was by the trucks computer it might not be correct, most of the time any changes you make tires ,fueling, tuning will throw that number way off.

pretty sure I just lauged my ass off. Maybe ford guys have them IDK, i dont pay attention to what the strokers do. But For Duramaxes there are the factory injectors, and there are the modified versions of the stock injectors.

But this porcelain injector guy sounds like a lot of diesel guys, put a hypertech on and get 8mpg and 200hp and before you know it BAM!! 1000hp daily driver that gets 40mpgs.

Realistically, I think the best some people have gotten with duramaxes running only #2 is 24-26mpgs. and that is really good I think.

But i could be wrong

Don't forget about stickers in the rear window, those can be good for 50hp each depending which ones you got.

I don't know how the claim was proven. It's a friend of a friend of a friend so, I've only heard about it. I would imagine it was claimed the old fashion way...simple math, but who knows.

Durallymax: What do you mean when you say "running only #2"?

My big thing here is that I'm going to lift the truck once I order it. Size of the lift will be determined by MPG's. If I'm only going to get 12mpg's with 38's, I'll just stick with 35's. But I'll go with 38's if I can keep the MPG's in the low 20's; high teens. Any input?

And I've already done quite a bit of research: I seem to have found the stickers with the highest HP rating. They're on order. ;-)

I got a friend with a lifted lb7 with 35's and he gets 18 on the highway. with tuneing alot of the time you can get a higher horse power tune and get better milage as long as you can keep your foot out of it. as far as injectors go stick to the stock ones unless your going to go with a bigger turbo(s). EFI live is your friend when it coms to these trucks. You looking at getting a new 11' LML?

Lift, wheels and tires don't go with MPG's. If you want to get good fuel milage, keep it stock height and smallish tires.

If your dead set on a lift, you better get the MPG's out of your head. You can help it but in the end it's a battle your not going to win. I'd plan to do EFI Live and prepare to spend lot's of time and money (driving around) on a good mileage tune. Your going to gain some back with doing gears also. Building the trans will net a positive gain as well.

Good Luck, you can't have your cake and eat it too. Might want to buy a super cheap beater POS to drive around that get's really good MPG's.

JMK777:
I'm in Afghan until next November. By then, the 2012's will be out. I'll be ordering one before I get back so that it's ready for pickup when I get home.

'05 Dirty Duramax:
I'm not necessarily looking for great gas mileage. I've always had a lifted truck so I know the consequences. This will be my first diesel so I'm just trying to learn myself as much as I can about my options. I just don't want to drive around with 12mpg's. I definitely want it lifted. It's either going to be 7" with 35's or 10" with 38's. Gas mileage will determine that. I'm still learning all of my options for mods for a diesel....that's the reason for the inquiry.

My truck is going to be a daily driver. I'm not looking into sled-pulling or racing. BUT, I'm all about optimizing. I've built up everything I've ever had. It's only for personal pleasure. I just can't drive around a stock vehicle. Too boring.

What's EFI Live?

Seth99:
I'm definitely not going with 20's! Not my forte. I'm all about meat on my rims. But thanks for the reference. :D

Like I said, I'm new to the diesel world so I'm going to pick your brains as much as I can. I appreciate all of the info guys! Nothing is going over-looked.

You can get decent milage out of either the 35's or 38's. I can get 20+mpg with my 39.5's. All you have to do is get the right axle gears and a good tune. There's a lot of bolt on parts that will help when combined together.

I'm looking into a Banks system too. I've heard Bully Dog is good but it seems Banks has much more advanced products. I'm reading up and figuring out that EFIlive set. The whole "computer" world is new to me also. I've always delt with naturally aspirated so this is a new concept for me. Much more complex, for sure.

Thanks for the input guys! I'll keep digging around and reading up.

Wow, thats awesome! Mine is definately not tuned for mpg's but even when I keep my foot out of it I cant do any better than 10. This is in traffic too. I dont have gears either though.

I would advise against the Banks setups - you are paying for their 4 page ads in the front of every diesel magazine. They have a few products I recommend, but alot of products that I don't. If you want mileage I would also recommend an LBZ or LMM (06-10) truck, for 1 it will be a whole lot cheaper, leaving you more money to modify it; for 2 with what you are wanting to do you will be voiding the warranty anyway; for 3 there are less emissions equipment to worry about with the older trucks (easier to get mileage out of them); and for 4 there are a lot more products available for the older trucks. When you do buy a truck get in touch with a reputable shop that specializes in Duramax and lay out a plan with them on how to get you to your goals within your budget.

The turbo-back, itself, won't make a difference, will it? Would Bully Dog be the way to go?
