dont expect them to be much of a racer, the autos are garbage make sure its a manual, they get amazing fuel mileage, my cousin has a 01 that he drives back and forth to school so he doesnt waste miles on his cummins, he gets 41 highway

Egr delete and clean out the intake manifold. It gets disgusting and won't want to go over 70-80 once it gets bad

I owned an 02 TDI for a couple years. Great car but it was an auto - trans started making noise around 120k so I sold it. Don't plan on riding in the back seat unless you are 3 foot tall. You can do a lot to them and have the ECM programmed, injectors, exhaust, and there is also a computer program that gives you access to some of the controls - I forgot what it is called but kinda like a wimpy EFI live for Jettas. I thought the car was very well built but it sucks paying for parts from the stealership. Loose your key and you're out a couple hundred bucks. Defiantly recommend the standard trans if you get one.
If you drive a Jetta that is not a TDI - you like men.

Just helped the GF buy a new 2010. I am not a car person but I really like this car it is very comfy inside and plenty roomy (I am 6'1). I think the new models have more room on the inside though. We just took it on a trip to Dallas Texas with four people in the car and had plenty of room for us to be comfortable for the 14 hour trip. It averaged 40-42mpg at interstate speeds and the motor only has 1,200 miles on it. I was very impressed with it for not being broke in.

All in all I am very happy with it. the new models also have an all new Auto tranny that is supposed to be better then the manuals.
