Inaccurate fuel gauge

When my fuel gauge gets down to empty… Just above the red… I stop by the fuel station and maybe get 19 to 23 gallons in my tank before the nozzle clicks off… I've tried to "top it off" but there's little room for more fuel…

I have an 05 long bed so I should have a, what, 32 or 36 gallon fuel tank?

Is there an adjustment on the fuel sender or on the gauge itself which would allow me to calibrate it?

Or maybe just get me a 5 gallon can of fuel and drive the truck til it sputters...

That way I can determine how far I could drive on empty…

My 08 dually was this way. Quite annoying to drive on the fuel light even though i know its not near empty. Especially in the middle of the night loaded somewhere i'm not familiar with. I even swapped a junkyard sending unit in. Didnt fix it. I'd think you would have to spend some time rescaling the sensor via EFI to have it accurate.

The fuel gauge is set that way on purpose by GM. They would rather have you make it to your next fuel stop than run out of fuel and have Bubba the tow guy come along with a can of something to pour in there and then fill the airbox with starting fluid 'cuz he doesn't know how to prime the filter housing. I carry a 5 gallon can with me when I'm towing my 5th wheel, I've run it way past the light and still had a couple of gallons left.

I figured the big tank would be different amount? The 26 gallon tank shows 20 on the gauge and 6 left once light comes on

My 34 gal tank has the light come on when I have 5 gal left. Came factory set that way.

you said "above the red" is the low fuel light on? if the light wasn't on I'd easily bet you could have 10+ gal in the tank. also if you are going solely by the needle, someone could have been in the cluster at one point and not put the needle back on in the exact spot.

a cclb should have a 34 gal tank. my low fuel light starts to flicker (will come on and go off depending on how I park) around 28-29 gal. will be on full time by 30 gal used.

Haven't gotten into the low fuel light area yet... I've always fueled up at what I thought might be 1/8 to 1/4 tank...

Heck... I didn't even know I had a low fuel light...
