Ignition Cylinder/worn key

I've got a very worn out key. With the zf6 I also have the push button on the cylinder to allow it to turn. The button never seems to work and takes some serious finessing to get the key out.

Will going to GM with my VIN and having a new key cut fix my issue, or do I need to replace the ignition cylinder too? If I do, will my key pattern change?

If you replace the cylinder the key will change. I have however, had good luck getting a new key for the original cylinder solve my issue in the past.

Thanks for the input, that's what I was hoping. Seems like my 02 3/4 Burb is having the same issue too.

If the new key does not work, you can get a new cylinder from GM. The dealerships don't like to do it, but the cylinders come with pins which will reset the core to your original VIN.

I had to do this when my truck was broke into last year and the column was trashed.
From memory, it cost about $50 for the cylinder and $50 for parts guy labor to set the pins in the cylinder. They would only do this with a new key, recently cut by them.

Thanks for that, hopefully it's not needed but I'd imagine this thing is pretty worn and the jiggling to get it out probably hasn't helped over time
