I want EFI, but...

I'm wanting to get EFI Live (DSP5 setup) in the near future.

Here's my issue: The truck's previous owner had a fella tune it, and that guy locked the ECM. I've since contacted that guy, but he seemed pretty un-interested in helping me out and unlocking the ecm. I may give hime one more shot... but not holding my breath.

So I guess at this point (with the exception on contacting this guy who locked it), my options are to (1) find an ecm for sale that is unlocked, or (2) purchase one from duramaxtuner.com pre-tuned and just pay the core charge, because as I understand it they would not be able to use my locked ecm therefore i would not be refunded the core charge.

I guess what i'm lookin for is input or advise as to how to go about doing this the most budget-minded. I can afford to get an ecm. I could afford to get mine tuned, if it wasn't locked/un-tuneable. Buying a new ecm and having it tuned may get a little pricey... but that may be my only choice?

How did the guy lock it or how do you know its locked?

Some people call DSP "locked" just because it can't be READ off the ECM. You can still flash over a "blocked" DSP file.

Had a buddy check balance rates with his V2, and also had him check to see if it was locked... and it was.
I'm pretty sure you can flash over a locked ECM, you just can't read it. Located a stock tune and do a full flash.
So I could just have someone flash a stock tune onto the ecm and it would clear the "lock", and allow me to have it tuned? I thought if it was locked, only thing you could do was have the tuner who locked it, or the dealer, clear it/reflash to stock tune...

So any tuner should be able to flash their tunes on my current ECM, over the "locked/blocked" tunes?

I don't need this "locked" tune saved or kept, means nothing to me... I just want better tunes, and adjustability through dsp5 switch. (right now I have just a single tune and it's pretty smokey - been pulled over twice, unintentially blowing too much smoke.)

Considered buying an ECM and going from there, but feeling out all options before i make a decision.

and yea I'd prefer a clean slate... but if the locked ecm can be "wiped clean" then I definitely have no problem using it.

I would hate them too. If you need to chanhe something it sucks waiting months for an update. I just go ahead and change stuff on my own now

Once you flash a new tune in it, it IS a clean slate. There is nothing left of the old tune and it is unlocked. There is NO reason at all to buy a new ECM, yours works perfectly fine.:thumb:

Ok, Awesome news, and thanks for the help guys. :thumb: Flashing over the ECM is now my most desired option.

Now: Can I have any tuner just flash new tunes over it, as it it? Or do I have to get it flashed to a stock tune first?

Beings you have a single tune LLY, it is probably locked with a custom seed key. I don't think even a TECH 2 can flash it now, but I'm not sure. I've read that LB7's locked with a custom key cann't be flashed even by GM, but not sure on LLY. Best bet would be to see if a dealer can flash in the stock tune for you and go from there. On an LLY you will have to have the correct tune in it for your accesories to work properly anyways(not like an LBZ or LMM where most any tune will work).
