I sell trucks pretty often. I always call my bank to have them verify funds when I get a check. They can call the bank that issued the check to verify it was made out to you with guarenteed funds used. I know it’s a little late for that but hopefully it helps someone selling a vehicle in the future.

Good luck

I second this but unfortunately a lot of times they are after hours sales or weekend sales that throw you for an loop . It’s a shame we have people that do these things and make Better livings being crooks than we do .

After hours I ask for a picture of the check and call my bank before they show up and match the numbers when they show up. I know it sounds like overkill but when I was 13 I had saved every penny I owned and bought a bike on eBay and got ripped off. Never again.

Ya it’s sad that people will go to such lengths to rip people off. Chances are it’s already at a chop shop and being parted out unfortunately.

If it’s not cash anything over a g or so I make them wait for the bill of sale and keys until I have a chance for the bank to verify the cashier cheque, bank draft or money order is legit and going to clear.

I’ve obviously bought and sold a few trucks in my time. I’ve seen a lot Of checks and generally know how to spot a scam.

This was an after hours last minute type deal or I would have called the bank. Should have asked for a picture in advance.

Live and learn.

Doesn't surprise me. It baffles me how pathetic people can be, hell my wife has had individuals try to buy $50 worth of MaryKay with a bank check. She just tells them cash or credit.

I'll try to keep an eye out for the truck, hope insurance gives you what it's worth

Sorry to here.

I try to never take a check!!!

You wanna pay me with a check, we are going straight to the bank to cash it out. Then and only then, I hand over the keys and title.

Did that with my last truck. Guy wanted to pay through his business with a company check. At first they were hesitant when I said I would accept a company check but, Only if they go to the issuing bank and cash it with me. If they won't go in the bank while I cash it, Something is definitely wrong. That's the only way I can guarantee that I get my money.

Until I have the actual cash, I won't turn over the keys or the paperwork.

I also try and get a picture of there Driver's License. There going to put the same info on the title's release of liability that I have to turn in so it also should not be an issue.

Sucks man. I'll keep my eye out on social media. Need to be watching CL as well, see if he tries to flip it or part it out.

I'm sure your local PD will cover all those bases.

Unfortunately fake cashiers checks are very common. This same thing happened to a buddy of mine a few years back even. They ended up finding his car somewhere down south. Usually its not just one person, but more of a theft ring type of thing. Chances are that guy got paid to give you the fake check and your truck is in a warehouse somewhere. Those "chop shops" get busted all the time so hopefully they track it down. Although, if any of my shit gets stolen I would hope they never find it........ its never in the same condition when you get it back. Anyways, I always give out the bill of sale and hold on to the title for 10 days until the check clears. Sorry for your luck. Cash is king!
