I have an 06 dmax with 161k miles. I bought it used about a year ago. While driving home from deer hunting this past weekend it developed a problem. As far as i know it is stock except for the intake and filter. I drive it everyday and im not hard on it. While coming home it started a noise that i thought was an exhaust leak. It seemed a little slugish but not too bad. Idrove about an hour home in 55-60 degree weather all highway. When i got about 3 miles from home it started a vibration. With it parked its worse in drive or reverse then neutral. It does it on deceleration when it is about 1100 rpm. Turns out i blew a hole in the lower boot on the drivers side. I fixed that and most of the noise is gone but it still has the vibration and some exhaust leak sound. It was loud like a tractor when i got it home. The noise seems to be easier to hear from inside the cab. While hunting i putted around in 4h but never over 15mph. Any ideas? No codes pending or present.2006 dmax automatic tranny and LLY. Thanks for any ideas or help you guys can think of.

I just thought of more that may help. The tee that the pcv lines go to was popped off the piece it goes on. The top radiator hose was collapsed until i took the cap off. I did wash the cap good but havent ran it to see if that stops the hose from collapsing.

I was also in snow up to my doors. Could something of gotten wet? I figure it would be dry after a day of sitting.

Drivers side lower boot. I've also checked the harness by alternator. If it was in need of the ice pick fix shouldnt it bring a misfire code up? I have no light on nor pending codes.

The boost tube? Sometimes they can be finicky without popping codes. If I remember correctly the ice pick fix issue pertained to LLY's. Have you looked around the motor while it is idling? Around all of the pulley's, damper at the bottom etc? Does the sound come out of the end of the exhaust or just sound like a leak closer to the engine? Is it a pulsing sound like a miss? Or a hissing sound only under load?

It is a rattle around the engine and seems to come from the drivers side. This is a 2006 and the vin is a 2 not a d so it is an lly but others say its a detuned lbz. To be honest on the drivers side it sounds like a tractor. Inside of the cab you can realy hear it. Because the exhaust is muffled. I forgot to mention it does have a 4" exhaust from downpipe back with muffler. None of the clamps are loose on it.

Interesting...

Maybe one of the manifold or up-pipes are leaking...with the truck idling and EGT's low, you can fairly safely take a finger and run it over and around all the connection points and "feel" for a possible leak...

An exhaust leak at the manifolds and up-pipes will change sound when in gear cuz the engine gets slightly loaded

I might also check the engine mount...a loose or broken mount would cause a vibration and slight noise, and thinking about it from the aspect of you were up to the doors in snow it might be possible they got really cold an possibly more stiff and possibly tore???
That's all I got...

Motor mount looks fine. I took the sheild off the drivers side up pipe and i cant feel anything there either. One more thing i noticed is when i took the T off where the pcv go it left a rubber sleeve on the piece the T goes on. I dont know if thats normal or not. I cant start it since the new boots wont be here until thursday. Im still looking. Thanks for the help in pointing me towards possible things to look into. Is it possible that driving it with a tore boot damaged the turbo?

I wouldn't think so...the boot that blew/tore was the lower drivers side, right?
That is the outlet side of the turbo, that boot connects the "hot side pipe" to the intercooler, it's pushing air at up to 22-24psi on a stock tuned truck through that tube...

Keep at it, whatever is causing the problem will become more evident the more you drive it...

Yes it was the drivers side lower boot. I know my way around a gas engine very well. This is my first diesel truck so the learning starts all over again. Its a matter of time and it will get fixed. It has to with this much good advice!! I am writing a list of things to check tomorrow after work.

Everywhere
Up pipe leak, loose TC bolts, cracked flex plate all come to my mind. Also don't forget to check your harmonic ballencer just to be safe. It probably is something simple though.
