I found this in the oil pump what is it

I took the oil pump apart to inspect it while rebuilding the engine and found this little piece of metal in it. Do you have any idea what it is

Definitely a dowel pin. I can't remember if the pump has any to align the halves? If it was in there the pump would have eaten it.

It didn't go through the gears. There is a small hole in the cases you can see to the left of the top gear. it fits in there but the tip will just protrude out of the one so it doesn't look like it would really have any purpose that way. I don't know.

I talked to a guy locally that has a lot of experience with them and he said it's an alignment dowel for the cases halves but he too had no idea how it got there without running through the gears unless it was accidentally dropped in there from the factory. It makes me wonder if when I took it apart, it fell out of the hole it was in & go in that groove. That's about the only way I can think of how it might have gotten there.
