If he doesnt have the newer style hubs, they sure as hell do something!
I guess you do need the short part to hold the bearing in the hub don't you.

So if my front driveshaft spins freely in 2 wheel drive my actuator is bad? I also started to get a weird humming noise from the front the other day. Front end is all brand new including wheel bearings. So either cv's or the diff then.

No, its suppose to do that. the LF CV is always drivng the LF spider gear in the diff and there is a bearing in there that goes bad. ive seen threads pop up on here a few times now. it can do what your describing. Generally CVs give you a clicking around corners when they are on their way out
lol yes sir! unless they are the new style. those are like the 2wd hubs and do not need the stub shaft to keep them together. i have yet to figure out how to tell them apart though looking at them side by side.

I know what cv sound like they go out. I have destroyed my fair share of cv's on other trucks. Sorry I wrote that wrong. Which bearing in the front diff are you talking about?

No, the actuator kicks the front diff out when in two wheel drive so the driveshaft does NOT spin, the only time they spin in two wheel drive is if something is wrong
