What is the procedure to check end play on a 4WD Allison?

Same as a 2WD. Check it at the input shaft as there better not be any play at the ouput shaft. Selective washers

are used at the ouput shaft to set clearance.

I should clarify. I don't know how to check the end play on a 2WD either. I have searched and can't figure out where to check or where the washers go.

Pull in and out on the input shaft and measure play. If it doesn't move in and out , the torrington bearings are pre loaded and they will fail. You need enough play to allow fluid to enter between the bearings for lube. .050 is a good number.
Check the play before tear down.

As Mike said, the washer goes on / over the output shaft. It sits next to the tone wheel (or blank spacer on 4wd)

Easy way to lift the input shaft, take a PTO cover off and pry up on the rotating assembly. Spec is .011-.061", though I would shoot for the higher end of that as Mike also stated.
