How slow do I need to go

I am towing 8000 pounds of boat and trailer from San Diego to VA. Today pulling up the mountains to Flagstaff, the post turbo (about 6 inches from the joint) EGT gauge kept going to 1200*. The temp was 102* air temp with the water temp gauge touching 235*. I assume the loud tire noise that kicked on and off was the fan. Why does it wait so long to come on???? I keep decreasing the speed and running the heater to help it. Its running the Predator tow tune (which says in the manual that its within GM specs) and a 4 inch turbo back. I am really upset with the quickness of this motor to overheat. I pulled the same boat with a 1500 4.8 5 speed flat on the floor over 4500 rpms for minutes over all of these hills with no temp problem at all! Also, the engine light is on for EGR but I was told it was ok for now because I didnt have to block it. I am killing this thing??????

55 but it was in a high gear. Can I go to M mode while driving? Should I change the oil in the am? Its only got 500 miles on it but it got hot. Plan on changing it in VA. Stock except fot tune, 4 inch turbo back and gauge. Tires stock too. thanks

I put mine in manual at highway speeds a lot while I'm pulling my camper . Most of the time I don't think to put it in manual untill I am coming up to a stop . Mark's turbo brake tuning is kick a$$!!!

Set your tuning back to stock see if iit changes anything might show other underlining problems or could just be the programer.

Not sure what your issues are. I have towed my 14k toyhauler with the Predator and only saw 1200 on hills and tall bridges. I tow in M5 with towhaul. My water temps never got above normal and trans temps maybe 180. You will get an egr code with the bigger exhaust especially if you removed the cat. Blocker and fingerstick will fix that. I really liked the Predator.

Try running in 5th and if you need go down to 4th on the hills the temps will come down.

Might stop at a carwash and spray the radiator out really good. X10 on 5th gear. Yes you can pull it into manual mode while driving.

Are you using Tow/Haul mode? If so then it shouldn't be in 6th gear at 55mph.

The fan was doing its job kicking on at 235* if the temps came down. You can't really trust the temp gauge since it lies. Also that isn't over heating 250-260 or so is. 1200* isn't really a problem GM says 1350* sustained is the max.

Hey Guys! OK after a short 700 mile day from Flagstaff to Shamrock, TX. The truck ran great all day in "m" and the temp never really got to 1200 even on some of the long hills. (Smoked a Dodge towing a car on a car trailer, I knew he was trying with the cloud of black smoke as I pulled up:D) After some responses, I realized I have 45,000 miles since febuary 1st with hundreds of bugs on the windshield. So I am thinking the radiator could use a wash. Thanks for all the help. :beer2:

I'm sure elevation played into it. Gasping for air these trucks are above a mile high. Glad you are doing better now. Good news is TX is flat haha
