How much harm?

I know this sounds kinda silly but I'm afraid to dyno my truck again. I'll race on the street or strip but for some apparent reason, I make out a dyno to seem all detrimental on our trucks. Is there really any comparison between drag racing or dynoing a truck with respect to harm on the motor? Maybe having it at 4000 rpm's in my face seems a bit more nerve racking than racing it. Just afraid I'm going to break stuff.

I am in your same boat, I want to dyno, but I am scared too. It seems like I hear more dyno catastorphies than drag racing.

Someone told me that the dyno loads it down so much (like even more than towing a bunch of weight up a steep grade), and thats why things start to pop.

i diagree, if this statement is true then why is it impossible to make full boost on a dyno ?its because you arent loading the truck hard enough . most dyno's not all , the mustang i was on last got me to 34 psi i normally on the street tag 38-39 psi and get up to 44 psi in 5th gear , my pulls were done in 4th . most dyno failures come from people shooting for the biggest #'s using lots of fuel or nitrous . i have never seen a dmax break on a dyno but a couple dodges  not saying it doesnt happen i just havn't seen it .

HAHA Well that is a good point about boost though. I guess I never thought about that. But it was just one of those instances where he said it, and then I just got worried about it. I may have to go see what she can put down after all then. I feel better about the whole thing. Thanks :hello:

4 hours before my first (stock) motor blew up, my truck was on the dyno. I then dyno'd my truck again with the built motor in the end of June. Between June and october I did not drag race it, sled pull it, or dyno it again until october when the [aftermarket] rods broke and destroyed it.

I will never dyno my truck again. Who the F cares about a number, a piece of paper doesnt make your truck go faster or pull a sled farther. Duramax's in general suck at putting up good numbers on dyno's anyways, I dont know why. Its not worth it.

The load depends on the dyno. We had Winston's on a SuperFlow dyno a little while ago and it was getting 40 PSI, told them to load it harder and they applied the eddy current to it for 1 second at the beginning of the next pull. It pegged his 60 PSI boost gauge and the motor looked like it was trying to climb out of the engine bay. After the load let go it held it's normal 50-54 PSI - bad part was that the pickup came off the tire and we didn't get a good reading on that pull. On dynojets I've never been able to get full boost, even using the brakes. We only really dyno as a reference point from time to time or at events for the fun of it and to show up the dodge and ford guys with turbo and injector upgrades with a stock intake, turbo and all on a 530hp LBZ. The funny part is dynoing 100hp less than a Cummins then going to the track the next day and out running him - especially at an event sponsored and put together by Dodge shops and clubs.

I think breakage depends on the dyno operator, I got a broken crank from the operator hitting the dyno brake at the same time as the truck brakes without putting the truck in neutral. It puts a whiplash effect through the drivetrain, kind of bad considering I had 6,000 miles on the engine.

Both Wayne's and Majestic put it in neutral or just let it coast down. I would personally rather they let it coast down. Every time I see them throw it in nuetral I'm afraid they are gonna shift too far and hit Reverse - I've seen them do it but luckily trans didn't actually hit reverse before they got it back into nuetral.

if you dont want the chance to break it i would personaly stay away from the dyno and racing. anything can happen.. look at your tune or have someone that knows these engines look at the tune to see if something isnt right before you hit the rollers

we dyno'd my buddies mustang and his tuner asked what he wanted out of the engine. we of course said the max potential made our numbers and left the shop to go race and didnt make it 5km before she let go... we asked for it:D
