How Much Diesel is Burnt at Idle?

Say you let your rig idle ofr an hour while in a restaurant - in traffic etc.

How much does it use in an hour?


Sorry if this is the wrong location - I don't see general discussions here???

Are there specific discussion areas for LLY, LBZ or LMM - if so don't see that either - easy to find on other Duramax forums....

Let's see. 11mm3 vs. 33 @ 70mph, 20mpg, hr=3.5g/3 ...

About 1 gallon per hour would be my guess. I know I've idled 8 hrs before but don't remember exactly how much fuel, I'm thinking it sucked down a quarter tank.

More then that I think it was more like.7/hr. Ben (Duratothemax) post #s for his truck a long time ago on DP. I think it depends on the truck a bit too the LBZ/LMMs use more IIRC to help the truck warm up faster.

I was was idling with the A/C full blast in 103F weather in Colorado at Bandimere. There was no shade for the kids, so they sat in the truck watching movies. Probably that consumes more.

Not sure how much fuel exactly it will use, but I know it 0mpg..and thats bad...:spit:

Pat prolly explained it best. I am sure you can log it and get real close...

Your not the only idiot, I have a hard time with the same thing.... Just go to google.com and type AFAIK means or FTW means etc. I have to do it alot too lol

But like Mike said it shouldn't be good, 0mpg isn't exactly considered very good fuel economy haha

For some reasone I never thought to try that on google ????? And I use google all the time. Hum....learn something new everyday I reckon.


And I agree....0 mpg tends to bring your overall average mpg down just a bit....ha.

Probably not as big as an issue with the DMAX's. I'm gonna say the advent of HPCR and fancy electronics and advanced injectors keep pretty good control of combustion in the cylinder.

The issue I feel would be greater, and is the same with a lot of motors especially diesels and especially larger displacements, is premature wear of bearings. Low speed idle is actually pretty hard on the bearings because there is more directional force applied versus when rotation is faster. Diesels are prone to it because of the higher compression and larger displacements are prone because of more rotating mass.

I've got my truck set to run on high idle most of the time. It eats quite a bit of fuel. I don't have any data to back up my claim... I've idled it for a longest of about 4 hours and that probably pulled 1/8th to 1/4 tank on high idle. Toasty Warm though! If its running, its usually driving a fairly long distance.

My old work truck was an 03 LB7. No high idle. It's idled/minimal low speed driving for about 200 hours during winter shutdowns. I'd say I was filling it up every 24 hours... 85 litres worth. It was quite good on fuel if you ask me. It was cresting 11000 hours and 60,000km when I left that position haha.

Its still a bad idea. Probably worse on the LMMs since they seen to have more fuel in the oil to start with thanks to the regen.
