Question: How many have broken Input shafts ?

I have billet shafts in mine and haven't broken any, but Winston has stock shafts (230K+ miles) in his truck and also hasn't broken any running 11.4s and doing alot of sled pulling. He's stripped out planetaries and hubs but hasn't hurt a shaft yet.

My crack is actually vertical along the splines themselves. I sent Mike a picture along time ago and IIRC he told me that is rather rare. Not sure how and when this happened.

Bump, I was told Im stupid for not putting shafts in mine. Who else has broke these? I have a friend who broke his stock output thursday

my own stupid opinion is unless you have a built motor and are putting down serious 800+hp, billet shafts are a waste of money.

Others may disagree though.

Snapped an Opie shaft in the same place as Mike stated. Tranny locked on shift and skidded the tires. Was on the street and not the truck but was on drag radials.

Next Friday ill be out running a kill tune on M&H Slicks 12 x 16 odds are my shafts will be just fine

That twin truck I posted about on here snapped one the night he went out to test the first tune right after he got it running.

Now has billets in it.

have not hit big hp numbers but on my 465 tune ive launched the crap out of mine on these big, heavy 37s (weight 150lbs apeice) at the track and on the street without an issue. guess we will see when more power is added :D

Not to derail too much but do the 5 and 6 speed trucks use the same flex plate? (strength wise.. I know the LBZ/LMM has a diff weighted flywheels to compensate for the heavier pistons, but is there any difference in strength etc.??)

Flex plates are the same. I believe the SoCal billet flywheel is lighter than the factory 2 piece combo.

Hey just throwing this out there. Has anyone done a cryo treatment to their shafts? Would it make a difference? Heck, I might give it a shot while I do my crank at the same time.

Are the 5 speed and 6 speed input shaft the same???

The shafts changed in late '04 to accept a larger torrington bearing where it rides against the C1 clutch hub. The shaft has not changed since. It is preferable to use the late shaft in high performance applications because of the stronger bearing. All you need is a late clutch hub and bearing to use it in the early trans.

Just found this thread, i've broken 4 stock flexplates, and 1 input shaft. The shaft broke when i pulled into traffic, started spinning i let out of it and wacked it again hard, pretty sure i hit the throttle at the same time it shifted second locked the converter and the tires hooked, next thing you know i had neutral and park lol
