LBZ: How long for the rust to build?

Anyone have an idea how long it would take for rust to progress to what's on this head bolt? It always had coolant in the engine.

Why didn't I think of that? Just kidding.

I'm looking at this bolt and thinking it took months, or longer to get that rusty. And, if so, then the blown head gasket I have really started a long time ago. I thought if someone has seen similar rusted bolts, they may have an idea how long it takes to get this way.
