I originally thought the same brushless lipo like ether help pilots use. Friend of mine is into the the RC Heli's and we were talking the other day, some of those motors make over 5 hp. they do pull 150 amps though.

I have built several large scale brushless trucks, they weigh in at 24lbs, I can make them do standing backflips. The power is absurd, instant torque and no real rpm limit, I love them compared to the old nitro stuff I had back in the day...

I've pondered this seriously for some time before too. Even was watching some motors and ESCs on ebay for a while. I think I would go with Lifepo4 batteries before LiPo due to their higher discharge rate. Still may but I'll have to see how this one pans out first
The only real problem I see with this is, other than cost, is I would need to gear it down to increase the torque. That would add to the complexity. But throttle control would be a whole lot easier
Speed will be determined by how fast you can spin the drive alternator. Short of a VFD or changing rotor poles in motor, not sure you will get much speed.
True. Off the top of my head math, it looks like it will only do approximately 2k rpm with the engine at idle. I would probably need at least 8k rpms to see any real performance out of it.
I could just purchase a cheap eBay ESC and go straight DC out of the truck. That would make altering the trucks alternator not needed and I could use it on any vehicle or make a battery pack for it if I wanted
