Looking to buy a higher output alternator for my pull truck. I added a 12V hydraulic pump for my steering this year and when I turn it on my volts drop from 13-13.5 to 11-11.5 quickly at idle. Anyone have suggestions on a decent one for a reasonable price. I like the Mean Green one, but it's $370!

Thanks Zak

I think I can get a Delco 205 amp one local, needs slightly longer belt in stock application.... Not sure on your belt setup currently...

just check the output of any new larger aftermarket alternator at idle speed. Some of them have awesome output but only above idle speed. Or carry a specially weighted brick to keep you at PTO idle :roflmao:

what do the volts do when you rev it?

you need to look at amp output at idle. i dont believe there is much difference in the 145 from the 105 at idle IIRC.

The volts will go up a little if you hold it at about 1500rpms. I think I'm going to go with the Acdelco 145 alt and some new Odyesse batteries.

I use Rare Electrical 200 amp alternators and haven't had an issue yet. I've installed about a dozen of them now, they are very reasonable through Amazon.com.

a good set of deep cycle batteries may be best. your drawing off the battery when volts drop under 12.6 volts

Yeah, that's my fear that it will drain the batteries down too much and if I have to shut truck down for some reason it will not have enough power to restart it.

can you put an amp meter on the pump and see what its drawing? what gauge wire are you running to the pump?

i would be more worried about the truck acting up on you pulling and causing things to shut down as you pull from low voltage than a no start at the end of a pull lol.
