LML Hey Nerds! Wireless Charging Ideas Needed

In short I had a iPhone 6+ for about 5 years and wasn’t too concerned when I bought my 2016 LML high country and found it had a wireless charger in the console. Then my 6+ let out the magic smoke electronics need to survive right before Christmas. Lucky, my gf had bought me whatever the new big one was and I got it a little early. Thought heck yea, I can use that wireless charger. Wrong. Too small of a hole. Anyone else come up with a way of modifying the console to move the charger base up or something else that doesn’t make it look like a dull apprentice got in there? Cause this ones the nice truck so I have to be nice to it. But durn it, I want my console charger to work. Maybe a 17+ console lid has a bigger hole and could be swapped? Any ideas or solutions guys?

No iPhone will work on the wireless charging pad in any 2016 truck. After 2016 they will physically work but the charging pads aren’t compatible with iPhones in the 16s

Apple uses a QI standard for wireless charging which is what the GM charger is, it is not a proprietary GM protocol.

You are correct on 17+. As far as I was told the wireless charges in the 16’s were made before the wireless charging consortium was developed. So the 16 charging pads don’t use the QI standards. This is the reason my iPhone X doesn’t charge. But I’ve put a Samsung phone on it before and it sometimes worked

Interesting. I know wireless charging isn't a new idea as they were doing it ~8yrs ago where QI was developed. Gotta love technology.

Why is it a waste of time to cater to the largest phone market? Apple is number 3.

In the US (for January 2018 to January 2019) Apple had 52% of the market share in North America.

Globally is a different story when broken down by OS and even more different when broken down by manufacturer. Long story short, in 2016 yeah it was a mistake but at that point Apple didn't have wireless charging (iPhone X/iPhone 8/iPhone 8+ were the first to have them in Nov 2017 from Apple).

Yea my 16 will only charge Androids , big waste of time by GM IMO

I have a cheap wireless charging case for my 7 plus and it works in my 16.granted it meeds to sit just right(i've gotten better at placing it),but it works.

I bought my ‘16 in feb of ‘17 and no phone I’ve owned since then will work. Anything with the fast charge isn’t compatible with an lml. I don’t know about the L5p if they work or not. Either way I gave up and just went with a cradle for my cell phone booster anyways and now that cutout in the center console is just an annoyance.

Has anyone taken the console lid apart and put in an aftermarket charging puck? I have a 15 with nothing and have been thinking about trying to make it work.

I took mine apart and checked it out. Even looked up a YouTube video on installing a replacement charger and just plugging it in inside the console to one of the usb’s. But I just said forget it. Figured the new 2020’s will work

I put one on my 2015. I found a youtube video on it. Just get a decent one thats thin enough to fit and cut a hole for the usb cord to slip near the hinge and plug in.

Moved over to Stereo and Electronics.

Thanks for that. I searched trying to figure this out and came across a similarly named thread from years back and decided to try it again.

Can’t seem to figure out how to reply multiple people in one reply on my phone, so to save y’all dealing with 10 posts from me, thanks for all the input. I have a buddy with a 16 and he has a pretty old Samsung I think he added a wireless charging plug thing under his case or something that works and I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas to make some stuff work with iPhones. I agree it seems to have been a strange choice by GM given that it seems phones are just getting bigger. This is a low priority for me right now though as my 06 needs another trans and dealing with trying to close on a house with a sweet shop. Figured this could be a side project to tinker with while waiting on moving.

No worries man! It’s all info and I try to absorb all I can get. Especially around here. Not a lot of things for me to add to discussions with the knowledge and experience floating around.
