Well that is more that the UK spell it differently then the USA. Now Canada uses both as a bit from on and from the other.

Do what I do like when I go to the US. As soon as I drive through the border I hit the first Walmart I see and buy a pay-as-you go phone. It's disposable or you can refill it with time every so often. That or check with your carrier and see what sort of long distance plans they offer for international calls.
