I have a 2001 duramax, it has 255,000 miles on it, but the tranny only has 150,000 miles. i have never changed the fluid in the tranny. my QUESTION is can i change the fluid now, or would it hurt the tranny? The gauge for the tranny is getting about 300 deg. When tranny get that warm it down shift pretty hard. Is the something i can treat the fluid with??? any help please

PS it is very hot down here in SOUTH TEXAS

I'd say Chang the filter and fluid, shouldn't hurt anything, just don't flush unless your doing a rebuild. It can cause issues with the lines

Spin on has no effect on temps, only shifting. It is very low pressure. ( 125 psi max )
Sump filter can have an effect on temps.
Flushing has no effect on cooler line.

That's way hot. You have a problem.

Change the fluid and both filters for starters. Open the sump filter

Wait, was that empty or loaded? Locked or unlocked?

Its been about 50,000 miles since spin on filter change. So you dont think it would hurt to change the fluid? But no flush. Ally fox you are right. awenta , it was empty no locked, but a 105 deg outside, on the highway.

If you were on the highway it was probably locked. Should be right around 200*

YES! 50k miles on a spin on is way too long. Change the spin on, drop the pan and change the internal filter. Refill. Drive for 50-100 miles drain the pan and refill.

At this point, I would pull the pan and see what's in the bottom of it. Replace the filter if it looks clogged. BTW, did you check fluid level? Too much fluid will cause overheating, level should be below the hot mark when it's fully hot.....
