Last time I checked Dex III is ATF.

And the patent on DEX III expired in 06, so if you notice there is no longer a DEX III fluid avaiulable any longer and only compatible with DEX III fluid. GM changed teh name of it to manual trans/transfer case oil when teh patent expired. As for the smurf oil, I believe it was reccomended NOT to run it in a 261XHD/263XHD transfer case by GM according to a TSB I read a few years back. I believe the smurf oil is actually a 0W20 type oil where as ATF was closer to a 5W20-5W30 viscosity. Not to mention that blue smurf oil is pricey even compared to most synthetic's.

My point was that Dex III is what my owners manual calls for in the transfer case. If you were to buy a Dex III equivalent in a parts store, you would have to buy automatic transmission fluid. It's all generic Dex/Merc stuff now.

The stuff that goes in your transfer case is red but isnt atf it manual trans/transfer case fluid . Do a little research about your vehicle and get references for anyone whos gonna touch your vehicle! Better luck next time.

On page 6-15 of the 2005 Silverado Owners manual, in the left column, second down, next to "Manual Transfer Case" (and also fourth down next to "Transfer Case (All-Wheel Drive)"), if CLEARLY states "DEXTRON®-III Automatic Transmission Fluid. Look for "Approved for the H-Specification" on the label".

THAT is GM's (and I would assume New Processes as well) recommended fluid. NOT a manual transmission/transfer case fluid.

Having said that, while not the recommended fluid, some people have been running motor oil in the TC, apparently with no negative effects.

If you want to run what GM recommends, you want plain old Dex-III ATF. Dex-III isn't a brand, it's a specification. The patent may have run out, but that doesn't mean fluid manuacturers can't make Dex-II spec fluid any more.

GM now reccomends the manual trans taransfer case fluid as that IS what was used to be DEX III. When the patent expired in 06 and they switched to DEX VI, they rebadged DEX III as teh manual trans/transfer case fluid. In an 06 manual it tells you this since in 05 they still had the patent on DEX III. So basically GM renamed DEX III to the manual trans/transfer case fluid.

Dex 3 works best in the TC because it allows the syncros to slow the gears down better for a smoother transition.
