I'm new to the Duramax world, been looking for a LBZ for two years now and finally bought one. 2006 LBZ 3500 4WD DRW. Truck has 69k miles on it, S&B air intake, straight piped 4" exhaust, and a Duramaxtuner DSP5. With everything done to it, I'm getting roughly 15-16 mpg and honestly I'm not impressed with the power it puts out in any of the settings. On top of that, there is a code thrown for "overboost" from the turbo. Two of my close friends have LBZs with Bully Dog tuners and nothing else done to the trucks and theirs seem to have more performance and fuel economy. I'm Looking for any knowledge and opinions on tuners or the other modifications to the truck and any knowledge on how to fix the "overboost" code. Any help is appreciated!

The overboost code is common on the LB7, not so much on the LBZ...Does it set the code in all tune positions?...Most of the LBZs get a bit more mileage than you're experiencing, speed is a major factor in determining what kind of MPG you can get...

I haven't had it long enough to really play with all the tunes. I have a 3 hour drive home tomorrow so we'll see what she gets. When I drove over to Louisiana she was get about 15.5 mpg when I was running around 70 on the sport/econo tune. I will play with the tunes friday and see what I can get and probably have another 6 hours of driving saturday to tinker as well. Sorry i cant answer all your questions yet and appreciate the help! Do any of y'all run Duramaxtuner or have experience with it?

Texas Chevy - I'm sure you're right, just surprised it doesn't do more with the basic tunes.

The Neens - I've heard that before thats why I'm curious...I ran the VIN to find out whether or not it actually was an LBZ or not

if it has the tap shifter on the shift lever it's an 06-07 lbz or a so called lly which is still pretty much an Lbz with a few less hp.

Why they're asking if you notice a difference in the tunes is because your switch may not be working or someone may have reflashed the stock tune before you got it.

DuramaxTuner's base tune is the race tune, as well as a few others.

So if the switch isn't hooked up or not sending the signal output/input to the ECM for anything else, it will run the race tune, and you should know that it's the race tune as any stock is just not that fast!

Get on the throttle & while running through the gears move the switch from the lowest setting to the highest. You should feel a definite power difference as you go up positions.

Yes

But no...
I wouldn't recommend this! Being on throttle and switching the power levels can be brutally bad for the transmission, even a built one, you can do all sorts of damage to the trans in a heartbeat. Going down in power isn't as bad, but switching up is dangerous.

The trans needs time to learn values needed for each shift and calculates said values for each shift based on previous values registered and stored in the TCM.

IMHO, this is a bad idea...

It won't hurt anything. You are thinking way too hard about this.

My paranoia runs deep
Ive broken just about everything doing things that "should" be "ok" that many others have done before and been fine with...

If you're not WOT, yeah, you "should" be "ok"

You won't hurt anything from changing tunes while WOT. I would like to hear where you conjured up the bad info that you can hurt something...

It could hurt if you switched mid-shift and the new tune defueled a lot less. Heck, I've freaked my transmission out by simply changing throttle position mid-shift.

But other than that, you won't hurt anything switching tunes at any throttle position. (Besides the normal Allison learn issues.)

I can definitely tell a difference in the tunes. I ran it in "heavy tow" +60 RWHP on my ride home yesterday and was getting around 17.5 at 70 mph so it did improve. I know this truck should be getting better than that though. I'm going to run it on "light tow" tomorrow on my 3 hour drive and see what it gets. I've seen these trucks get much better mpg. I'm just trying to figure this out. My buddy with an identical truck to mine got 19-20 doing 65mph towing a 8000 pound trailer on the interstate with a bully dog.
