^^^ No, its not a game. In our overly-litigious society we have companies have to treat every policy holder the same. When you give someone more money than the next person that is considered bad faith and opens the company up to huge lawsuits.

The "salvage" is not "buying your car back" it is simply a deduction on the value because you are still keeping the vehicle and probably can profit off of your claim.

My dealings with insurance companies the ones to stay away from are the Geico/progressive types of companies. State farm is usually a pretty good company to deal with and my company as well but I can't disclose what company I work for.

esurance

The thing that Im dealing with now is trying to get them to stop being stupid about the comprehensive vs. collision deductable. Everyone ive talked to (besides esurance) says "ummm...yeah...thats definitely comprehensive...there wasnt an accident, and another vehicle was not involved...so why is that collision"

Because my collision deductable is $1000 and comprehensive deductable is $500

^^^ Ask to speak to a supervisor, if that doesn't work tell them you will file a formal complaint with the department of insurance, they hate dealing with them.

I hate paying for something only to find out that a loophole is being used to screw me over.

Perfect example, I bought my son a newer car, wanted to insure it so I could get to DMV to register it BUT, because Irene was coming they would not write the policy until after the Hurricane passed even though I wanted to insure it on the Tuesday before it hit CT that Saturday.

I was told that they needed to reduce risk and mitigate any potential for losses !

That sucks. With my coverage I am automatically covered for any new vehicle I buy for thirty days before I even need to let them know about the purchase.

The value of your vehicle is the limit most any policy is going to pay. To re-enforce that the car is a total loss, they require you to lose the car. (to them) That is, They will pay you $xx for your scrap. They are, in turn, required to scrap the title. The particulars on that vary from state to state, but you get the drift.

The key, if you buy back the car, is to get the title before the it is scrapped.

It is not "unfair", though it feels like it when your perfectly good older car gets whacked.

Next time you buy insurance, find one with replacement cost coverage. If you have killer mods done, then get them legally appraised on occasion too.

And keep your receipts! My samurai went from getting 3k back after totaling it to 10k. Granted its a little different situation, without the receipts id be screwed
