I just filled the almost empty tank on my Massey Ferguson diesel tractor. It has tier 3 non turbo 48 hp Diesel engine.
Almost immediately after starting it began to run rough and started blowing white smoke out of the exhaust. I shut it off and now it won't start, I plan on draining the tank tomorrow and adding different fuel,
Any other suggestions would be greatly welcomed.
Thanks
Dan

Check the banjo bolt on the fuel feed into the pump to see if it has a screen in there.

Also fuel filter?

Is it a high pressure injection engine...?

IF ITS NOT, AND ONLY IF ITS NOT....
If it were me, I'd drain the tank, change thw filter(s), add new fuel with an additive (that isolates/dissipates water) then bleed the lines out with new fuel before I tried to start it again...

If its a high pressure system, I'd take the injector and high pressure lines off and clean them out and prime the low pressure side like described above

That's the extent of my shadetree mechanic knowledge:D

Yeehaw, that's what I was thinking. Guess I know what I will be doing tomorrow. Is the white exhaust smoke normal if there is water in the fuel?my fuel filter is a graci type with the glass bowl. The one on my boat lets you drain the crap without taking the filter apart.

Sounds like water to me, hopefully it is just fuel related.
I am not familiar with that type of filter, sir!

I'm just your typical (under)average keyboard warrior!

I assure you if any of my ramblings are helpful, its by the dumb luck of sheer hapenstance

I drained the tank and found water. I cleaned the filter, lost the crush washer behind the banjo bolt and ran the fuel through a water separator filter and put about a gallon back in.
It still won't start and is leaking fuel when I run the fuel pump at the banjo bolt but my big question is, will you damage the engine if water gets in the cylinder. It still cranks and almost started but it's not hydro-locked like an old BMW airhead motorcycle.

fixed
drained everything, ran the fuel through a fuel/water separator funnel from tractor supply twice, put it back together and bled the system.
started right up

white smoke means it's starved for fuel

White smoke means water in fuel or low compression, or unburnt fuel from leaking injectors. But always start with the cheapest things first. Glad you got it going:thumb:
