May I ask why you havent taken the truck to a competent diesel shop or dealer and had it gone over to see if any issues match your concerns?
I know the guys are trying to help, but its next to impossible for people on an internet forum to give any kind of accurate diagnosis from afar.

Especially when we're trying to diagnose a problem he hasn't even experienced firsthand.

Well since I've already shown that I don't know what I'm doing, I'll go ahead and ask the question. What do I do for a basic tune? Are we talking about getting an electronic tuner. I've only used one once, on an Avalanche I had. I didn't mess with the engine, but instead changed the shift points on the transmission. Made it into a whole new truck and I was very pleased. If that's what we're talking about, do you have a suggestion on a brand/type?

Thanks.

I think your problem is you are comparing the ol' LB7 to the LBZ and the LML, which, is not fair to the LB7. I know that my LBZ and my LML both would outpull the LB7 I owned, as well as my grandpa's. This is simply due to the fact that the LB7 is rated much lower than both the later engines I mentioned.

I think the LB7 would surprise you with a good tow tune. Contact one of the EFI Live tuners on this board and they can set you up, if keeping up with the later models is that important to you.

Honestly, it sounds like the LB7 is performing just as it should, so as I said, if keeping up with the LBZ and the LML is that big of an importance, get a good tow-tune and the ol' pound 7 will surprise you.

Just to add to this, your 2003 model is actually only rated tat 520 pounds of torque, as that was all the zf6 manual was rated in which they installed in those years. Yourv2006 is a detuned lbz rated at 605. If it has any tune, it very well may be well above that. I would still check the driver side boost tube, holes are very common.

I have taken it to a diesel shop. They did the pre-buy on the truck for me, which I paid them for and should have. They also did the recent repair on my 2006, which didn't fix the problem. So we fixed it. They also diagnosed another problem at another time, which didn't solve the problem. So we fixed it. They are the best shop in town. I've known them many, many years. As in I knew their parents. They are good people. But I'm just not too keen to keep spending money with them when they don't seem to be able to fix problems for me. Sad but true.

And to be fair, I did not make a big pull with this truck, but I did the initial inspection, the pre-buy, and all the first weeks driving. It wasn't till we put it in service and put a trailer behind it that this "problem" became a problem. My guy driving it is really good, so if he says there is a problem, I believe him. Unfortunately in this case I think he was overstating things a bit. It is down on power but not as much as he thought. So he was right, and wrong.
