Gaskets seem to be on their way out. Just wondering how long it takes normally to do gaskets and studs? I'm a certified Peterbilt technician with 3 years in the field.

Weekend at most.. .. Guessing under 600rwhp?
Pending power level LML (currently what you get at dealer) head bolts work just fine..
Paid ~550.00 for 2 head gaskets, 36 head bolts, 8injector o rings and 8 copper seals.
Everything else is is reusable.. Or glued together with rtv sealant.
~3-4 hours engine is out or in. Sure beat doing 36 TTY bolts over the fenders/grill.

It's about 425 now but plan on going more in future so I'm doing arp studs and grade c gaskets. Where can I get the O-rings and copper seals? The dealership I would assume.

IMO headstuds are pointless unless you got rods.. Now a days..LML head bolts hold more than LLY rods do...

Fwiw LML head bolts are silver vs everything else is black.. And run ~200.00 vs ~600.00 studs do
Your money.. Just letting you know ;)
Just about any vendor here can get them merchants auto has then in stock.. Iirc

Ya this is true but down the road if/when I decide to do rods I will already have studs

Get a Victor Reinz gasket kit. #HS54580A is the part# you need I believe. It has everything but the HGs themselves.

I think a weekend is a very ambitious guess for a first timer even if you are an excellent tech. Book calls for like 32 hours. Not to mention the fact that the heads will likely need machine work.

I did mine in cab. Never even did duramax injectors before i did mine. Me n 2 buddies had both heads off in 5 hours. Obviously it takes longer going together.

My dad and I did mine over the course of 4 days, about 4 or 5 hours each day and then 12 hours on the 4th day. Had it running late that night. This included leaving the engine in the truck, cleaning and machining the heads, installing downpipe, and installing head studs

I think I had about 50 hours into mine the first time I did them. That was with the engine in the truck. I did not machine the heads the first time. I did spend a lot of time trying to clean the manifolds, intake ports, and y bridge by hand to get the soot off, that was a notable chunk of the 50 hours. I also made my own EGR blocker plates from 1/4" steel plate at the same time.

Definitely pull the cab if you have a lift, or pull the motor if you don't. I've done it with the engine in the truck, and with pulling the engine...will never do another set with the engine in again. Hopefully will never do another set period... :roflmao:

The majority of guys that preach picking the cab likely have not dealt with a crusty Northeast salt belt truck. I have never picked a cab for HG and I realize its mostly, preference, but I have done Headgaskets on crusty trucks that popping that cab would have opened a serious can of worms.
