Question: Head Work Or Dual CP3's?

I will be building my motor over the next two months and just got my taxes done and have a little extra money to play with. I have enough to either get a dual CP3 kit or get my heads ported and polished.

What should I do?

2 cp3's and injectors if you don't have them. After I bought my SoCal heads, I realized that it was a lot of money wasted. Not worth it I'm my opinion. UNLESS you are cranking out power at some ungodly level and want to squeeze out every bit of cfm possible.

You can do what joe (fctry287) did. He talked to guy and guy broke everything down to him on what to do. Joe went into his heads with a dremel, meticulously ground out all the walls and came back and polished them up. Took him a few days. But every little bit counts I guess.

My plan is for about 800hp for pulling in the 2.6 class. I have 60% nozzles that should be good until my injectors go bad then step up to 100% nozzles.

I am also leaning toward dual CP3's.

Hopefully fctry287 will see this or maybe I should PM him to get a little more info.

here's my thinking, if you plan on serious upgrades in the future that may include head work, well it's easier to add dual fuelers later then do your head work. yes the gains wont be as noticeable but could help out down the road. either way it's a win when you get to use extra funds on the truck :thumb:

Is the 120 not gonna hold rail? Or are you considering duals for more of a reliability reason?

I would do 2 cp3s. If anything i would only do some mild porting with the heads. I had a set ported quite a bit last year, and they only lasted 1 pull before cracking. Duramax heads are hard to port, so i ran a spare set last year that was ported very mildly, and didnt match my intake. This year i just had them all matched and called it good. So mild porting and valve springs is the only thing i would do, i think out of all the head work, valve springs is the only gain you will notice. But like i said, i would do cp3s first if your big pump wont keep up.

Oh it should keep up I was just thinking for reliability reasons and take stress off the big pump.

Maybe I'll have them matched for intake and exhaust and call it good. I have heavier springs that will be going in.

my heads are cut up pretty good, hope they hold. I did so because my thinking was in a class as air limited as ours , BOB WS, I want as little restriction as possible. That probably becomes a lesser factor when the air supply is less limited. At least thats my thinking anyway. I also understand though why the most competitive trucks and class es do the same though when looking for every last inch.

That is true, and thats what i was hoping for, but after that i can see why people stay conservative with duramax heads. Every set seems different as far as casting thicknesses. Good luck with them, everyone i know that has ported them heavily, has problems.
