Specs on 2014 Honda CB500X:
Honda makes 3 versions of the CB500 -
CB500F - Naked Bike style
CBR500R - Sportbike version
CB500X - Adventure style
Honda calls this an "Adventure" bike. However, as delivered has almost no offroad potential due to the canyon carving 160/60-17 and 120/70-17 Pirelli Trail Scorpions it is fitted with.
It is huge seller in Europe, Asia, and Australia. So for 2013, they imported them to America. They became the best selling Hondas in the market. You could get them in any color as long as it was black.
For 2014, no changes. Well, you can get any color as long as it's white. 2015's aren't available yet.
Due to Euro licensing, the CB500's are only allowed to make 47HP. And all the CB's make exactly 47HP with 32 ft/lb. But the goodness is that the torque curve is flat. It makes over 30ftlb from 3,000 to 8,500 rpm. It pulls clean from 2000 to redline (8600).
The engine itself is newer design for Honda. It is a 4 valve vertical twin with SOHC using a H style rocker and displaces 471cc and runs watercooling. It's 67x66.8mm bore/stroke ratio is unusual in today's engines. It has a longer stroke than all the 450cc singles. Hence it makes just as much torque as the KTM 450MX race bike, and the same HP. But more area under the curve.
With fuel injection and low 10.7 compression Ratio, it runs on regular gas. And the recommended oil change interval is a whopping 8,000 miles. Fuel economy is outstanding for a 1HP per Liter engine, EPA style testing yields 71 mpg, and real world driving yields 65.
Any time you are at least 2000 rpm, the engine pulls clean. It has an automotive flavor to the powerband. Very smooth delivery everywhere. No power spike.
The chassis on the X edition gets more travel front and rear, but nothing to write home about. IIRC, it's about 5" in the rear, and just under 6" in the front. While has a mild steel frame, steel swingarm, cast alum 17" wheels, steel tank, it is still under 400lb dry, and with the 4.5 gallon tank full it is 430lb.
I'm 6'1" tall and it fits me well, with an upright seating position. Very easy to ride. Feels right.
Drawbacks - Clutch lever is too close to the bar, not hyd, and not adjustable stop. It hits my fingers with 2 finger operation. 17" front wheel limits dirt tire choices.
Nice bike, reviewers agree. Best in class. But not a race bike. Top speed is 108mph, and runs 14 second ET's.
