first week with my half tonner i pulled a 20' 12k with no brakes. only about 10 miles but I would definitely NOT do it over again! Very squirrely, especially on bends.

When I was in high school I towed about 9k pounds (around 14,500k gross truck, trailer and metal) of scrap metal 30 miles with my old first Gen Tundra. It had a v8 but was not considered a full size truck. Kind of in that grey area between like a ranger and a 1/2 ton. That truck had big mud tires, no abs, rusty frame and a broken 2nd leaf spring on the drivers rear. It's max tow rating was 4500 pounds I think. I had a picture but don't know where it is.

THAT was scary, and stupid. But that old truck did it. I towed my mud truck about every weekend with it too. For over 2 years. It went through a couple leaf springs and grenaded the rear spider gears once. I sold it 3 years ago with around 300k miles and still see it driving around occasionally

Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I've got spare time. But for now, for your sake... -Tommy Boy

Just because it can be or has been done, doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it or do it again. Hold my beer and watch this! If you're towing over 5k, get a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel. That's it.

I totally agree with your entire statement . My situation was spur of the moment ( lets throw air bags on it and see what it can do , cause I got a good deal on a trailer .

While I will say I'm impressed with how it does on power if you keep it wound up over 3000 rpm , the chassis on these trucks are not built to be "loaded" on a regular bassis . I wouldn't even consider towing the puller behind it if I didn't have a new trailer with really good brakes .

If your towing a lot, yes a 3/4 or 1 ton is a great idea, a gas motor will just fine. I've pulled with a 96 350 for years now, since 96 and over 200,000 miles with the stock motor still running great to this day. I wouldn't be scared to pull 10,000 lbs with a half ton at all, about 65 mph would be as fast as I would want to be going. If your only going to pull it 10-15 times a year not really worth a 3/4 ton to me

Look at some of the rv forums, the Ford lovers are towing 12-14k 5th wheels with their 6 cylinder 1/2 ton eco boost, but Ford is the most powerful truck ever made, NOT!
Eh, only been three years.

Don't recall who had this in their signature....

Every time I hear someone say that their 1/2 will tow as much as my 3/4 ton I just compare it to having sex with your cousin.......it can get the job done.....but the long term effects can really F%$ something up
