First truck into the shop this morning. Complained of rear end noise. Went to drive it and this happened...Rear end locked up at about 40mph. Talk about a morning wake up call! A four door dually with a flat bed definitely does not handle the same as a Honda pulling the e-brake!

I've been through some hairy accidents before but it still shook me up a bit. This happened on deceleration so it wasn't too bad.

So further investigation... The pinion nut backed off. Backed off so clean that the pinion threads weren't even damaged and the nut is still sandwiched between the u-joint and pinion flange. The customer is checking their records to see if a pinion seal has ever been done on it. If so the shop that did it may be eating a whole diff

Here's a few carnage pics. The crack in the housing, where the pinion lodged in the carrier, and where the pinion tried exiting the diff housing...

Did this to ours few weeks ago, new gears, spool, and axles in april. Pinion sheered clear off just below the splines. 2.6 truck with 4 315 bfg's on rear on the tightest track of the year. At least we werent going down the highway!

Polish the edges off the chipped gear teeth, JB Weld the case, and back in business :) Add some duct tape to hold the pinion nut in place this time.
