Allison 5sp: Guru's needed

Been chasing issues for a while and decided its time to give in and ask for opinions. I have an 01 W/alli and the trans won't engage. if I put it in any gear other then R the truck try's to engage and then Kicks into N. the selected gear then flashes. I do still have reverse. All this happened one night after work. I was headed up a slight slope and the truck just seemed to go into neutral. I cleared the codes that night just trying to get it home and didn't write them down.

So far I have replaced the nsbu( wiring may be bad still a possibility). Replaced the ignition switch. Dropped the pan changed both filters( fluid looked and smelled terrible, metal shavings on magnet). the only code im getting is a p0500 so I'm going to get a tcase speed sensor and replace the fluid. Is there something else I should be doing or looking at.

Stock alli / 250k miles /was supposedly rebuilt not long ago.

You're saying the fluid was junk and you have metal shaving in the pan, time to have it rebuilt. I don't think you're going to patch it back up to get it going.

That's my feeling. Is this a common way for them to go? No pop, no slam, no bang, just limp. More history on the truck. It was supposedly rebuilt recently by previous owners and iv put about 5k on it since iv owned it. Any advise or ideas of what went wrong will help guys. Thanks

That's what mine did. I just suddenly couldn't go any more. Barely made it 9 miles to the shop.

I guess I was lookin for more of a dramatic ordeal. Lol any suggestions on the rebuild. gmax 5-3, precision convertor?

Take it to who rebuilt it and tell them to shove it! Something was put together wrong/backwards, generally when a trans "lets go" its just clutches, unless it got bound up.

Just sounds like whoever "rebuilt" it before you bought it did a bad job. It happens.
At least in Idaho, you can go to ATP to get it done. Good luck to you.

It was actually two owners ago that it was rebuilt, just not many miles on it since, so its my problem now. we will see what the carnage is before too long.
