How much do you want to spend. how secure do you want it to be, how big, what kind of protection do you want from fire. are you going to store any thing else in there like documents ect. do u want it to be proteted from water incase of fire?

Hey Tommy,

Some good questions. I am currently in a process of building a house. The room has concrete walls all the way around (roof, floor, and walls are all concrete). I am looking for a fire proof safe (1400 degree + for 60 to 90 min.). Water is not a concern because the house is being built on a hill.

Money is not an issue. The room will also contain important documents. I am having gun racks and shelfs build into the walls.

I am currently looking at Browning and Fort Knoxs gun vault doors.

Does that help?

Water may be a problem if the firemen spray water on fire in the area of the safe. I think tats what Tommy meant by water tight. Dont forget the dehumidifier.

The only place I think water would be able to get in is around the Vault door and maybe around the holes that were drilled for the electricity wires. I won’t need a fancy de-humidifier. Colorado is a very dry climate.

1400 for 60-90 minutes may not need a vault door, unless of course you want to freakin' overkill it.:D

I take you want the vault door as the entry door into the space in question? Or perhaps another enclosure exists within the space in question? You already have a concrete encased enclosure, 4 hour rating minimum w/ 2500 lb mud, .50 max water, no rebar, 9 guage wiremesh 6" OC. Basic concrete crap.

Ask your contractors door man to look into a 2 hour door and frame assembly ($700), then consider the failure time. Can it burn for 2 hours before the fireman arrive with water?

Hope i understand and this helps you.:)

Save $$$$.

The vault door will be used as an entry door.

I guess I am trying to predict the worse case situation.

Great advise those far.

Glad to be of some help.

SOmething else that came to mind was safety. Do you have children? If the kids get closed in the room can they get out without special assistance? ie- is the safe door really heavy? interior unlocking mechanism?

You'll want/need fire/smoke dampers for ventilation as well. If this proposed construction doesn't meet code you'll have to do it post final inspection.

Good luck.:)

I agree. The door will have a latch on the inside of the door. The guy that is building the house has a safe room in is house, and he has built many homes with safe rooms. He is a custom builder, but I will double check everything.
