Have a 08 6.4 ford torn down for blown HG. The guy just got the truck from a dealer and it had the EGR turned off and no DPF on the truck. After messing around for 5 weeks (various reasons) I got the heads sent off to be tested/shaved etc. The truck has "110K" miles on it so I never really looked around for excessive wear, more for damage from the programer that the guy got the truck with.

The shop called me and said the heads looked like they had over 200K miles on them, the valve steams and guides were out of specs from wear. Today was the first chance I had to go out and really look the lower over, and the rear cylinders have no hone marks at all, the front 6 have light hone marks but near the top almost none. I don't see any star patterns on the pistons, nor any sort of erosion/ anything strange on the pistons. I was going to measure the bore, but both my calipers have dead batteries from the cold so not today.

I will get some pictures posted up, but what mileage would you guys guess was on this truck? If it was run hard I could see it wearing the hone off quicker(esp the back 2 cylinders) but with no damage to the pistons I think this truck might have falsified mileage and might have a case to make the shady ass dealer help with the bill (who sold it to him as is with the blown HG without telling him)

I don't have pictures of the valves but I trust the shop when they said it looks like the have over 200K on them

Take a listen to this on with 105k on it. this guy just bought it and it had oil leaks and was miking this noise. so i said well I can tear it down to find the noise or you can take it back to see if the dealer will help. and they told him this noise wass normal due to the tight tolerances on these engines. so he has just been driving it for a couple weeks now. oh and the ford deal first said they would sell him an extended warranty but after they fixed the oil leaks and listened to the noise they said they wouldn't sell him the warranty because he wouldn't need it. hmmmm

since my nice starretts all take the same battery and they are dead, my el cheapo caliper says that #8 has about 5 thou taper and 3 thou out of round. #6 has 2-3 thou taper and just under 2 out of round. tells me time for some lower work.

I don't, it was puking coolant at 110K miles. I figured lifted a head. didn't expect it to look like 200K plus miles inside. didn't notice a lot of blow by on it

It had some but not anything way out there. I wasn't really looking for it, but it wasn't pouring out

Wouldn't a carfax or similar vin check tell you if there was a milage discrepancy? Especially if there were multiple owners before him

My motor has that same exact noise only not near as loud after it has idled awile or its heated up to 160-170* after I first start it. If I drive it, let it idle it takes a few minutes for the noise to start up. It didnt to it til I took it on a rampage one night right after I got the tranny built and the motor wasnt hardly broke in yet. About an hours worth, so I know why it's doing it but not sure what it is. It runs fine it seems like.

Ever occur to you the previous owner may have blown the original motor and bought some high milage motor to stick back in it just to trade it in so he wouldnt loose his ass? Becareful what you get into the middle of you may find yourself in court.Just tell the owner what the facts are and let him take it from there and get everything in writing from the head shop. Can the ecm be checked by ford to see how many miles have been registered on the ecm?Maybe the guy never changed the oil and just kept adding when it got low and it took its toll on the motor??? Hard to say for sure.
