Gonna be one of those days!

Got up this morning to find a broken water pipe. Usally not a big deal, but this one happens to be in the ground next to my pool. It filled water in behind my pool liner until it ripped then continued to fill my pool with water and red mud. Got my pool guy over here now. Yeah it's going to be one of those days. Oh yeah, I was supposed to leave and go on a cruise with my family and kids today as well. Yeah, one of those days.

Good point - Everyone should have an emergency kit with a water and gas shutoff tool, and have the family practice how to use them to turn off all the utilities once a year. And replace the smoke alarm batteries at the same time.

X2 at my house we actually have secondary valves inside just past our meeters with valves so you can just pull a lever and shut off every thing quick

Ball valves are against code here in Miami because they can cause water hammer.
For the main we're supposed to have normal valves. But they ain't on my house

When you shut off a valve quickly that has water flowing thru it will send a shock wave thru the pipe. You can put a water hammer arrester(or a tee with a vertical pipe) before the valve to give the pressure somewhere to disapate.
Im guessing the reason for ball valves being an issue in Fl. is most of the piping in the slab.

My (The cities) water valve at the meter is a ball valve. I opened it to fast one day and blew the water line to one of the toilets..fixed one problem then created another bigger one.

The neighbor bind me and the one across the street, both have their own water valve wrenches now:rofl:

I check the batteries in the smoke detector at least once a year...just to be reminded that it's hard wired

You are correct on the first part, with closing the valves quickly.
The pipes in the slab has nothing to do with that. The piping is under the slab and penetrates up thru the slab. The pipes then have a poly vinyl sleeve to prevent any contact and thermal expansion and rubbing against the concrete. The code for piping under the slab, is one continous piece of pipe. If you have any fittings under the slab they must be silver soldered.
