Had some slight concerns with the trans. 1. In park/nuetral I could hear a little whining and rattle coming from trans that went away when put in drive. Sent Josh a text he said it's pretty normal for a tripple disk to rattle a little and pump would be a little louder with the extra pressure it's pushing.

2. It's 56 degrees where I am right now. I made a 20 minute trip. Mostly city driving got on it maybe 2 or 3 times in a small tune. Trans touched 186 degrees then dropped to 178ish for the remainder of my 40 minute drive. Josh assured me it's normal for a built trans to run a little warmer. I will look into a upgraded cooler when summer rolls around!

It will run a little warmer because of the higher pressures. During the warmer seasons when I take the family up to the mountains, I have seen my trans temps get up to 220f. This is with the converter unlocked driving up mountains doing about 30/40mph. No load other than the family and some gear nothing heavy. I tried using tow /haul the lock the converter going up but didn't help much. With a built transmission I think it is a very good idea to get a good cooler.

Mine runs around 110 over ambient in warm temps. In the cold it's somewhat less. I have a yuuuuge bumper blocking flow though. Your temp sounds on the high side but not abnormal if it were mine. Did you double check fluid level?

I did not, didn't figure I needed to being as Josh built it but after thinking I know they can suck some fluid down after putting some miles on it. I'll check fluid this morning!

My built trans runs around 100f over ambient unloaded or loaded. Towing my 5th wheel it gets sometimes around 120f over ambient but drops once the converter is locked and moving more than 30mph. That is with a stock cooler.

I'm putting a Mishimoto cooler on my tow rig for this season so I can report back the improvements.

a built trans and higher pressure will run hotter. during the summer towing up hills, i would see 230-240* temps on the trans. thats converter locked the whole time on a stock cooler. it didnt help coolant temps were always 210-240*. 315psi in my trans makes alot of heat.

I put Mikes setrab cooler on the truck and have not seen over 210 under the same conditions.

If you are running at or under coolant temp, you are doing well. Remember, the trans heat exchanger is in the radiator so if it is colder than water temp, it will heat it up as well. Unless you are running 210* or more consistantly, i wouldnt worry yet.

As for the mishimoto, i wouldnt touch that junk with a 10 ft pole. Their intercoolers leak, their radiator hoses leak at the connections they made, and ive seen radiator issues. the only reason my intercooler is working is due to it being from japan before they out sourced to china. Mikes coolers work, plain and simple.

At 175f (transmission temp) the fluid level should be at or below the half way mark of the hot markings. I believe below is better.

I'm my opinion I think adding a cooler is a good idea but I will definitely be asking Mike for his advice. He is good at tell me what I need and don't need. If I do end up getting a cooler it will be one of Mike's. I don't trust the knock off brands and for a little bit more you can get Mike's.

My mishimoto intercooler in my built motor truck has no issues at 70psi nor had any issues when it was leak tested before we hit the dyno.

I'm not saying they are the be-all-end-all but I definitely don't think they are junk.

You have not had enough contact with other shops to know the failure rate.

I checked fluid. At 150°F the fluid was in between cold and hot hatchings. Waiting to here from Josh on what fluid to add. I believe he said DEX 3 but just wanna tripple check

dont fill it. get it up to 175* or more then check. It should be short filled. Josh is a smart cookie :D. Short filling keeps cooler temps

As the fluid heats up it will expand. Just keep that in mind. At 175f you will want to be at the lower hot hash marks. There should be a line then 3 or 4 hash marks , the the word HOT, then 3 or 4 more hash marks. You will want to be at the bottom hash marks in the middle if possible. That is what I always been told and I try to do. To much fluid will make the trans run hot.

That's where I was headed with the question :) I also agree on the Mishi, which is why I sold my free one NIB... but I did get a PM by a trans builder saying it was the best he's ever used, so time will tell the story!

His comment needs to be qualified. I've seen that cooler and I don't believe it.

Unfortunately that’s me “best” as in fluid temps. A customer supplied it and temps were lowest I’ve seen yet. I tried another to confirm with the same results. I still prefer the quality of what you’ve provided over the years but I was surprised at how well the mishi worked. The connections leave something to be desired but I’ve comfirmed max cooler pressure hot and cold on few occasions and to hit 55 psi wide open throttle is doing something so they probably won’t have many issues if any at all even with the poor design.

I shared the comment but not the sender; it was a private message after all. But since you outed yourself, Evan... LOL. FWIW, I would not have outed you.

I’ve got nothing to hide :). If something works it works others opinions don’t matter considering I test everything I do to confirm what I’m looking for it’s not hear say or internet regurgitation. I’m not a fan of how they connect to the factory lines and Mikes coolers are much better quality overall but as far cooling the mishimoto just plan works.
