Home depot, lowes throw away and crush shit every day that is good or slighlty damaged. they ether get credits from the manfacture or right it off. in most caases they right it off as loss wich is worth even more to them then selling the product off the shelf new. its just the way the cycle works. It does suck to see nice or even new stuff get destroyed for minor inperfections.

My dad bought a $500 grill from his local home depot for $125 b/c some little kid had came by and kicked a dent into one of the side panels on it.

Some pizza faced employee was coming to grab it to throw it in the trash, and my dad asked him to get the manager. Mgr sold it to him, but just said there was no warranty or returns on it. That f'n grill is the shit!! SOOO badass it's ridiculous! Have to say though, my old man is one hell of a smooth talker. He could sell a earplugs to a deaf man!

But it should be a crime how wasteful the U.S. is. Screw vehicle emissions... just look at all the wasted energy that gets put into products that will never see the shelves. Thats probably 100x more than cars and trucks.

Some may or may not know but my line of work is landfill design, yada yada yada.... anyways, I was working at one the other day doing CQA work for methane gas well drilling and we were right beside the active face (where they are currently dumping the loads of waste being brought in). One of the loads was a tri-axle dump truck from Easton, the ball bat company. The landfill operator said they've checked to see what some of the bats are and some of them had price tags in the $800-900 dollar range and EVERYONE OF 'EM has to be hit by the compactor (the thing with spikey wheels and a blade on the front to pack in the waste). I asked if I could grab one for a tire kicker and was greeted with a BIG f-u. He said if any of those bats were found on a ball field somewhere some day, HE (or whoever signed off on the form to receive them) would be PERSONALLY responsible not the person with the bat AND could be fine up to $25K and 10-yrs in the pen. Not to mention that scavenging is illegal anyways.

I left well enough alone. :(

Stuff like this happens all the time. Being in the bourbon capital of the world, yes, even get loads of it in from time to time. The local SHERIFF comes down for that one and watches EVERY bottle or barrel get crushed. Same deal with computers, appliances, etc.

In some places, the fed. gov't has their own landfills and wow, some of the stuff they throw away is new or at the least, still very useable.

Most of this stuff is thrown away for ins. reasons. I'm sure some of the bats had some flaw or sweet spot or something but why couldn't they melt 'em back down? Recycle the metal from the cars, etc.???

I know exactly what you mean. When the ATF (or any government agency) seizes weapons, they must be destroyed. Makes no sense to me, but it's required. Most of them are crap, but sometimes they are really nice pieces. It's a shame really.

And one wonders why they're in financial trouble; I can understand not selling the "car" for liability reasons, but what about individual parts? They could be selling doors, fenders, transmissions, diffs, engines, trunks, hoods, seats, etc, (everything but the VIN'ed body) just like a junkyard would (heck, they could have their own junkyard doing it as a seperate entity to keep GM safe from lawsuits), and rather than throw out all that money, they could MAKE money, even if they where selling the parts for 1/4 of what they're worth. Under those circumstances, I can't see how they could be any more liable than a standard junkyard would be.

I did get the upper hand of one occation;)

When i worked at the BMW stealership, a 328i came in for a motor change, manual trans car he missed a grar an mechanicaly overreved it. (did a "Money Shift" cause its a shift that costs alot:rofl:) So it bent all the valves. We we got him a used motor (non warrantee job) and he nor his insurance co. wanted the old one. Well anything "junk" that someone would want that goes to the trash, our douche parts manager would go and bash the shite outta stuff with a sledge so no one would really want it then. Like M5 wheels, BMW warrentied them for clearcoat problems and replaced them and didnt want the defective ones. Nothing wrong, just need stripped and refinished! Very expensive wheels! But our A-hole would smash them so nobody could have them! There was a V8 block i even ask for and stated i didnt want to fix or sell it, I just wanted an alum block to clean up for a coffee table!:D Nope! Smashed it!

I decided to screw them and go dirty!

So i had the guy changin the motor wheel it out to the trash at the last possible minute before we went home, I pulled my truck back there like i was goin to the wash bay and instead tossed the motor and boxes of parts in the bed and peeled out of there for home! Ahahahahah! I WIN! Turns out i have me an exellent builder engine for a E30 motor swap project down the road!:spit: Boy Bob was pissed that engine dissapeared before he could ruin it, but he had no way to pin it on any one!

:happy2:

when I worked for a big trash hauling company I asked why the retailers would destroy perfectly good merchandise and I was told its because people could dig them out of the trash and return the items to the stores for credits, and the retailers would lose out on the items twice.
