Getting truck smogged problem

The EFI live that I have is only for LB7's and it won't read the LLY/LBZ. I can't read anything about the system except for a few PID's and the VIN#. I'm going to have to go to someone and have them do it. Guy at SoCal Diesel is the closet to me.

The problem is the Cali emission equipment looks at the vehicle vin, not the engine vin. This is why a dsp tune will not work. I don't believe a stock tune for a LLY/LBZ engine will pass because the OS doesn't match the vehicle(LB7) vin.

May have to have a LB7 OS matching your vin, modified to be able to run with the LLY/LBZ conversion.

Or just move, but not to Idaho...

The vin in the ecm needs to match the vin on the dash. Also, the calibration/os needs to be a factory one from gm. The os doesn’t need to be from the year of the vin, just a factory gm one. If you load a factory tune in with all your emission stuff on and change the vin in your ecm to match the dash you should be good. Also DONT take it to a STAR station, their only goal is to fail everything that comes in the door. Look for a smog station that is not a star station. Only gassers are periodically required to go to star stations. Diesels are not required as of yet, for the occasional start test.

The ecm vin has to match because when the they scan the bar code on the renewal and the dash the tech compares it to the obd2 readout. If it doesn’t match, it can be percepted as if the obd2 readout is from a different vehicle then the scan (I’ve personally have had this issue with my truck).

Factory gm os with the right vin and all emissions on, no star and your good to go. If you need help with any of this stuff lmk, I can get you all you need and flashed onto your ecm if needed.

That makes sense, Mass is nearly the same now in the last few years, except we don't have the same Smog requirements. And the emissions modules can give a status of "not supported" , just not "not ready" or failed or anything like that.

Well I would thank Mark at Danville for helping me out on this. I purchased a new ecm with the trucks original vin programmed in it. Installed it and ran it around before taking it to the smog place. Truck passed no problem.
The system(California's smog program) checks to make sure the ecm vin and vin in the window match.
I went on the "Bar" website and under "engine transplants" your suppose to go to a referree station and have it inspected and then they put a sticker of approval(if it passes)in the door jamb. Hope this helps others out in this wonderful state.

ive had dsp tunes not be able to work for the reason that it takes more memory in the ecm or at least reports say egr as n/a instead of pass or not passed in the monitor section. i can load a modified tune but has to be a single tune to be able to pass.

curious to see if single tune trucks with def system will be able to pass as easily. pre 07 trucks did have cats but nothing electronic telling them if they were actually doing anything.

i want a new diesel so bad but this is just getting to a point where its not worth the trouble.

I would love to start a petition to be able to pay a decent amount of money to be SMOG EXEMPT. id be happy to pay a decent chunk of change for this , having that as an option to me would be worth it .
