I'll be using the truck for mainly DD, and occasionally at the track. I'm hoping the stock axles will support the 1k hp mark, I think I'm going to go with the grizzly locker to replace the g80 though.

the stock rear end will be just fine. jsut know that the grizzly locker will click around corners and acceleration around a corner will make it lock in, making tire wear increase over an open/limited slip/g80/air locker rear diff.

Another point to consider is that the numerically lower ratios are a lot stronger than the higher ones. The tooth count and amount of contact is much greater on 3.42 than 4.88 for instance. So much so that in sled pulling applications that typically break all the ring gear teeth off, like 4.88s, regearing to 3.42s will shear the pinion completely off and leave the gear teeth perfect. Problem is faster r&p ratios load the trans and transfer case much harder.

Well to a point. maybe with the current available gearing options we have in the 11.5" rear diff. the lower the ration, the bigger the pinion but like you say, the pinion shaft is more likely to shear but the ring gear its self becomes thinner as well. the higher the ratio, the smaller the pinion so less contact on the ring gear for strength. the ring gear is thicker and the ring gear teeth are not necessarily thinner or smaller (maybe by a small margin but it will depend on the mfg and how they make it), its the lack of contact that likes to strip the teeth off the pinion or the ring gear. it seems the 3.73s have a very good ratio between ring gear thickness and pinion size to make them pretty damn strong, they just aint the most optimal gear.

You'll be fine on the street and at the track. You may lose the g80 eventually but it can last a while.
